Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumWhat are the ethnic demographics in Queens?
This kinda reminds me of the rally he held in an historically black church in a predominantly black neighborhood in the majority black city of North Charleston, SC. But, oddly enough (and very telling) was the fact that the ethnic diversity of those who attended was MORE white than Vermont.
All I'm saying is that BS has a problem with the AA and POC communities, and without them on board, he doesn't have a prayer.

(115,869 posts)The U.S. Census Bureau reports that the population of Queens is 50% white, 28% Hispanic, 24% Asian, 21% black, and 3% mixed race. Almost half (48%) of Queens residents are foreign born, and 56% speak a language other than English at home. Some of the largest ethnic groups are Chinese (9%), West Indian (7%), Italian (7%), Indian (5%), and Irish (5%). https://www.brownstoner.com/queens/news/get-the-facts-the-demographics-of-queens-and-whats-changing/

(581 posts)No one had told them about the Sanders rally, they said.
April Simpson, president of the Queensbridge Tenants Association, said she got a call from the Sanders campaign only the day before to inform her about the rally and ask if she was attending. She told the campaign staffer about the scheduling conflict.
"These people were coming from near, far but they weren't from Queensbridge," Simpson told Patch in an interview. "That rally wasn't for us."
Simpson said there were no flyers publicizing the rally in Queensbridge's buildings, which more than 6,000 people call home.
A Sanders campaign spokesperson said the team handed out flyers to Queensbridge residents going in and out of their buildings on Friday, the day before the rally, and had reached out to Simpson as soon as they got her contact information and invited her to meet with Sanders.
But Simpson said she felt slighted.
"The residents that were sitting in the meeting, they said they found out from all the people going past," Simpson added, calling the lack of outreach "disrespectful."
And yet Queensbridge Houses served as a rallying cry for the elected officials on stage Saturday, including U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who was there to officially endorse the Vermont senator for president.
"Let's acknowledge the ground that we are on, which is the ground zero for the fight for public housing, and fully funded, dignified housing in the United States of America," Ocasio-Cortez said during the rally, according to a Gothamist report.
Corbin Trent, a campaign spokesperson for Ocasio-Cortez, declined to comment for this story.
Bishop Mitchell Taylor, a community leader who grew up in Queensbridge Houses, said he was concerned the Sanders campaign didn't reach out to residents prior to the rally and added that it "seemed to be a pretty white rally " when he passed by.
"They chose a picture over a population," he said in an interview. "How could you use Queensbridge Park as your rallying point but not engage Queensbridge people as a part of the rally?"
The Sanders campaign previously told a news reporter for Gothamist that staffers had posted flyers leading up to the rally but didn't specify where the flyers were.
Instead, it was the flood of attendees emerging from the 21st Street-Queensbridge F train station that clued many Queensbridge residents in to what was happening in the park that bears the same name as their home.
"Everybody was like, 'What's going on?'" community activist and lifelong Queensbridge resident Billy Robinson, 55, told Patch. "We just saw a stream of people coming from the subway to the park with Bernie Sanders signs."
"You've got the biggest projects in the world, and you didn't even let the people there know what's going on in their own neighborhood," Robinson said.

(67,782 posts)...for her endorsement of Sanders.
Logically, being held in Queens, one would have thought it would have taken place in HER District, the 14th District, the border of which is only a few hundred yards from the location of the rally.
There are several more suitable venues within the 14th District, most notably Citifield (which may not have been available), Astoria Park (about 3X the size of Queensbridge Park), Flushing Meadow Corona Park (the location of the 1964-1965 World's Fair), and the USTA National Tennis Center - all of which are in the 14th District. There are also a couple of parks in the Bronx section of the 14th District.
One wonders why it wasn't held at any of those.

(16,878 posts)Using a community as a backdrop without actually engaging with the members of that very community is a slap in the face to those individuals and makes any claims you might make during that rally ring hollow.
Would it really have been too much work to actually reach out to the community well in advance and engage with them? Or was it more important to have a "bounce back rally" for Sanders?
I don't think the Sanders camp has learned anything from 2016. This type of action mirrors what happened on the ground in South Carolina in '16 when seasoned SC politicians and civil rights activists reached out to the Sanders campaign to offer help and they were told, essentially, "Nah, we're good..."

(67,782 posts)...it alone would be the fourth largest city in the country behind Los Angeles, Chicago, and Brooklyn (also part of New York City)
As of 2012:
27.9% Hispanic or Latino.
27.2% of the population is white
20.9% African American
24.8% Asian
No doubt the white % is lower and the other three are higher by now.
The backdrop of that mostly white crowd in your OP photograph, right across the street from the rally, is The Queensbridge Houses, the largest housing project in North America.
That housing project is:
61.4% African American
30.1% Hispanic and Latino
2.3% white
1.9% Asian.

(42,862 posts)He really does have a difficult time in connecting with the AA and POC communities, doesn't he?
With that in mind (and the fact that the BS campaign has pretty-much "written off" those voters) it seems pretty obvious to me that he doesn't stand a prayer of being our party's nominee.

(42,862 posts)Agreed. He definitely does not have the confidence (or support) of the AA community... or other POC communities. Without their support, he doesn't stand a prayer of being our party's nominee.
He should withdraw now. Save his breath (and stress on his heart) and return to one of his three houses in Vermont... and faithfully serve out his term as the Senator from Vermont.

(42,862 posts)Indeed! It was a golden opportunity to engage the AA and POC communities... there they were! Right there! Just yards away!
Yet, not an invitation or flyer or announcement was made. The BS campaign has written them off.
The BS campaign doesn't care. (He's got a lousy campaign staff.) Sadly that reflects on the candidate as well.
He doesn't have a prayer of being our party's nominee.
Especially after his "fainting spell" and his heart attack and his stents... It's unclear to me why he even continues. I think he should just go ahead and withdraw now.

(43,545 posts)numbers with POC and Bernie was pulling Pete's, it would be a 3 way race, Biden, then Warren, then Pete, and Bernie would be toast even now (he will be anyway, down the road). Unfortunately, Pete is nowhere near Bernie or even Warren level with my fellow blacks voters and I do not see that changing much atm, unless he does very well (even may have to win it) in IA and then NH, which would be a huge help in NV, which, then would perhaps portend a very decent showing in SC, etc etc.
In the new (very favourable to Biden) A rated national poll from SurveyUSA, Bernie is pulling 18% of A-A's and (so surprisingly) doing even better with conservatives (24% to Biden's 33%) and also is 2nd to Biden with moderates at 17%
