VOX: The Hillary Clinton-Tulsi Gabbard feud, explained

By Zack Beauchamp@zackbeauchampzack@vox.com Oct 22, 2019, 8:40am EDT

Hillary Clinton emerged from relative political obscurity last week to claim that Tulsi Gabbard, a Democratic presidential candidate and member of Congress from Hawaii, was “the favorite of the Russians” prepping for a third-party spoiler run during a podcast interview. She went so far as to imply that the representative was “a Russian asset.”

Gabbard fired back by calling Clinton “the queen of warmongers, embodiment of corruption, and personification of the rot that has sickened the Democratic Party.” In Gabbard’s telling, her party’s 2016 nominee was behind “a concerted campaign to destroy my reputation ... through your proxies and powerful allies in the corporate media and war machine.”

“It’s now clear that this primary is between you and me,” Gabbard, who is at 1.2 percent in the RealClearPolitics primary polling average, concluded. “Don’t cowardly hide behind your proxies. Join the race directly.”

This is a bizarrely intense fight given that these two are members of the same party. Clinton suggesting Gabbard is the Kremlin’s chosen agent for destroying the Democrats in 2020? Gabbard accusing Clinton of being the puppet master behind a massive conspiracy against her? Are these people serious?

Unfortunately, the answer to that question is “yes” — in ways that reveal some troubling tendencies among American liberals and leftists today.

With her track record, people need to pay attention.

Make you wonder if the NYT misquoted her accidentally on purpose as that paper has quite a long history of Clinton hate.

Hillary's appreciation thread on DU..

Hillary was right about trump being a Russian puppet and no one listened to her and here we are.

As one of the people in TG's district.. I'm grateful to Hillary Clinton and the People supporting, Kai Kahele, gabbard's Challenger are, too.

The people of Hawaii are helping Kai Kahele now..

But local insiders say a primary challenge from state Sen. Kai Kahele is to be taken seriously, in part because he already has high-profile support among towering local officials.

That includes three former governors in the local Democratic establishment: Neil Abercrombie, Ben Cayetano and John Waihee, who don't often appear as a bloc.

"That gives a pretty good indication of how the mainstream Democratic Party here regards her," said Colin Moore, director of the Public Policy Center at the University of Hawaii.

Kahele told CNN on Monday that his campaign had its best day of fundraising when Gabbard and Clinton clashed.
Gabbard has not formally announced a reelection bid for her House seat. Candidates have until June 2, 2020, to file for that November's election.

I personally don't think Gabbard has ANY plans to disrupt anything and please bring this post to my attention and shove it down my throat if she does run 3rd party. Sure she lines up with Russia on like one or two foreign policy issues putting her at odds with many Dems which has possibly caused Russia to latch onto her and put a few Russian bots out to help her campaign which was going no place until Hillary shined a red hot spotlight on her, but that is as far as it goes. Anything else is everyone imaginations going wild. This goes back to Gabbard being a Maverick with the DNC when she didn't like the good old boy networking going on. Just as they said on ABC, news twitter is filled with this conspiracy stuff but it doesn't line up with the current evidence. Even Malcolm Nance who would know, has said she isn't a Russian asset. Gabbard likes the more left wing part of the party and she will be backing any democratic nominee. As for going on Fox News? Lots of Dems have done that over the years from Wes Clark to Pet. It gets her exposure and raises her profile.

In fact, the actual thing Clinton said was that Republicans were grooming Gabbard to be a third-party spoiler candidate in 2020.

“Hillary Clinton waded into the Democratic primary on Friday by suggesting that Russia was backing Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii for president and that Republicans were ‘grooming’ her as a third-party candidate,” The Times said in a corrected report (emphasis from RawStory).

“It’s now clear that this primary is between you and me,” Gabbard tweeted about Clinton. “Don’t cowardly hide behind your proxies. Join the race directly.”

In an interview with Fox News Monday, Trump used the inaccurate quote to justify diminishing the accusations of his links to Russia.
