Democratic Primaries

i.e., useful -- to the Republicans, to the Russians, or both.

The evidence is clear: Russia established a pattern of attempting to disrupt the Democratic primary in 2016 and is obviously doing the same thing this year. The only remaining question is why they chose Tulsi Gabbard.
The most obvious answer to that question is that Gabbard has centered her campaign on a message of ending regime change wars, like the one in Syria. That is based on a lie, and just so happens to reflect the talking points embraced by Assad and Putin. The United States condemned Assads use of violence to put down civilian protests against his regime, which is how the civil war in that country began. But U.S. military involvement in Syria has always been about defeating ISIS, particularly by working with the Kurds.
Gabbard also tries to sell herself as the anti-war candidate who stands for peace. But in addition to calling herself a hawk when it comes to the war on terror, her past positions hardly qualify as peaceful. When Putin and Assad began bombing northwestern Syriaa campaign that has been labeled a war crimeGabbard endorsed their efforts.

Vladimir Putin has focused his efforts to influence U.S. foreign policy on three areas: (1) Ukraine, (2) Syria, and (3) overturning the Magnitsky Act. On all three, Gabbard has either provided direct support or failed to oppose his aims. Of course, it also helps that Gabbard has positioned herself to malign not only Hillary Clinton, but the entire Democratic Party as wellspecifically by claiming that the 2020 election has already been rigged.

(6,346 posts)The NYT is now saying they misquoted Hillary as saying Russians were grooming....she says she meant or said Republicans were grooming.... Problem is Clinton's spox doubled down on the Russia stuff and this retraction comes SEVERAL days later. Here is the doubling down:
Quote:
Clinton spokesperson Nick Merrill doubled-down on the former nominees conspiratorial charges, confirming to CNNs Dan Merica that Clinton was referencing Gabbard without referencing the congresswoman by name.
Divisive language filled with vitriol and conspiracy theories? Cant imagine a better proof point than this, Merrill told Merica. This is not some outlandish claim.
So which case?

She is useful to them. She supports many of their positions. For example, from the article:
Vladimir Putin has focused his efforts to influence U.S. foreign policy on three areas: (1) Ukraine, (2) Syria, and (3) overturning the Magnitsky Act. On all three, Gabbard has either provided direct support or failed to oppose his aims. (6,346 posts)And that would have been a real problem if that rule or practice had been in place during the Iraq war about "WMD."
I guess i am a Russian asset too. All that means is disageeeing with official US policy that is important enough for Russia to have taken a position against it. And I have no problem with that esoecially from an elexted member of Congeess vetted with a Top Secret clearance.

(108,980 posts)And that isn't a good reason to accept her positions -- supporting Assad, supporting the far-right leader in India, denigrating the Democrats, and cozying up to people like Trey Gowdy and Steve Bannon.

(6,346 posts)But that seems really risky to me. Van Jones used the word "dangerous."
Enthusiasm is a big thing in elections. This whole "asset" thing is the oppositie of unity.

(25,471 posts)You should probably take a closer look at your candidate and her background if you truly believe that a lack of unity is an issue in the party. Her frequent rants about the party are specifically designed to discourage unity.

(6,346 posts)Is to call someone out as a Russian asset. Don't Russians want to divide us? This certainly does the job. Those calling someone a Russian asset meet the divisiveness test for being a Russian asset themselves.
We should all take a step back.
I can admit to some excesses by TG, can anyone admit Hillary was divisive too?

Ummm. I am an American and I sure as hell don't give a what all to that which may be important enough for Russia to have taken a position against. Jaysus! Russia is not our friend. Putin is not our friend.

(83,789 posts)I have followed Nancy LeTourneau for years. She had a blog, Horizons when she posted as smartypants.
I posted many of her ops for years at DU. I caught a lot of shit by doing so. Needless to say she pissed people the hell off as she will now with your OP. Her take, as a southern white woman were spot on with race issues. She is 100% correct here as well.
She has always been right by my book.
Thanks.
