November 4, 2019
A Fox News poll released Sunday did not have great news for President Trump. His approval rating was 42 percent, with 57 percent of registered voters disapproving of his job performance and 46 percent strongly disapproving. A year before the 2020 election, he is behind all of the top-tier Democrats, including former Vice President Joe Biden (51 percent to 39 percent), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (46 percent to 41 percent), and Sen. Bernie Sanders (49 percent to 41 percent). Even worse, Trump is losing to Hillary Clinton, who isn't even running, 43 percent to 41 percent.
Since Clinton is not running, it isn't clear why Fox News decided to ask voters to choose between her and Trump. The pollsters noted that the last time they included Clinton in a matchup against Trump was Nov. 3-6, 2016, during which period she was also leading Trump, 46 percent to 42 percent and also actually running for president. Which, again, she isn't currently.
The poll was conducted Oct. 27-30 under the joint direction of Beacon Research (D) and Shaw & Company Research (R). They surveyed 1,040 voters nationwide on cellphones and landlines, and the poll's margin of error is ±3 percentage points. ~ Peter Weber

(11,989 posts)HRC is polling worse against Trump than she did in November of 2016. Back then she led by four points (and still lost mostly because of electoral college variation), today she leads by only two. Trump would look at these figures and see that he's doing even better against HRC than he was 3 years ago, when he won, meaning he'd think he could probably beat her even more soundly today than he did 3 years ago.
The good news in the poll is that we have at least three candidates--who actually ARE running today--all of whom do better against Trump than Clinton does (and better than Clinton did 3 years ago). Biden beats him today by 12, Sanders by 8, Warren by 5, in the same poll. (And as these numbers increase, it becomes less likely electoral college variables would be enough to swing it the other way.) Warren is a little too close for comfort, though. I'm hoping that still reflects lagging name recognition compared to the others. Morning Consult still shows 18% haven't heard of her (or haven't heard enough to have either a favorable or unfavorable opinion), compared to only 8% for Biden and Sanders. (Clinton would presumably be in Biden/Sanders territory or better.)
Considering how terrible the Trump presidency has been, though, and that Hillary's press is not as bad today as it was 3 years ago (no bad Comey news or constant anti-Hillary commercials running), it is a bit surprising that Hillary does even worse against him now than she did three years ago. Maybe, as bad as Trump has been, people aren't as scared about the prospect of a Trump presidency as they were then, i.e. he's graduated at least to the level of the devil we know.
