Pete Buttigieg drives for the middle ground between Biden and Warren

DES MOINES — Pete Buttigieg’s presidential campaign scheduled a rally here on a recent Saturday night, setting up a choice for local Democrats: see the mayor of South Bend, Ind., or watch a nationally televised Iowa Hawkeyes football game.

More than 700 people turned out — and stood for hours in occasional drizzle and frigid temperatures to hear Buttigieg speak from a small stage on Roosevelt High School’s front lawn.

“A big football game and lousy weather, and he gets 700 people? Things like that just don’t happen,” said Matt Paul, a local Democratic strategist who ran Hillary Clinton’s 2016 Iowa campaign. “Something is clearly going on.”

What is going on is Buttigieg seizing an opening in the Democratic presidential field, pushing his way into the gap between liberal Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and the more moderate former vice president Joe Biden.

If Pete wins Iowa and name recognition takes off because of the media blitz & does well in NH his numbers with AA with jump. Once people start actually listening to him and EW, people like them better than Biden because he is just being carried off of name recognition.

Its not like people are excited for Biden. Its just they want Trump out and he is the name they know. But the more AA hear from Pete or EW the more their support will happen. Lets be honest. He was a complete unknown when this started and look at where he is in Iowa where he is spending his time. The people in Iowa like what they hear and are put to sleep when they hear Biden. When this started Pete wasnt on the map and Biden was the favorite in Iowa.

Give the guy more time and he will win over AA just like everyone else that listens to him speak.

switch to Mayor Pete. First of all, he lacks experience. He was the Mayor of a small Indiana city or town...very blue also. He has no foreign policy experience either. I would not support him in the primary...general yes but not the primary. He is talented and has a great future but not as our nominee in 2020...too soon.

Not by the number of people showing up at his events
not by his fund raising

Mayor Pete has as much experience as Obama did when he ran - maybe more since he actually governed

the fact that he was in a military gives him some foreign policy experience - again as much or more than Obama

That is fine if you would not support him in the primary - its your freedom to support whoever you want but to make a claim that AA would never support Pete is what I'm calling BS on

I find the constant refrain that he has no black or little black support to be rooted in GOP ant-gay racebaiting tactics used to divide Democrats.

being Gay...I have no idea if a Gay person could be elected president in 20...maybe or maybe not. However, no one will be the nominee without support from AA voters. There is a poll up right on DU now saying he has between 0 and 4 %.

The GOP has tried to pit the LGBT community and the black community against each other ever sense. They do things like show poling preference far out in primaries which doest show actual support, just preference, to divide us. It is rooted in both racism and homophobia.

I know that Black families often have a more difficult time with their kids being Gay than I do..my daughter is Gay. I don't give a damn about who she loves just that she has love... And she has faced very ugly discrimination I might add in Ohio...that has worsened under Trump. Many of the AA women I campaign with are very religious have a really tough time with LGBTQ...I believe in time they will evolve but right now such bigotry really does exist. I don't get the feeling that their reluctance to support Mayor Pete has to do with his being Gay...but has to do with the firing of the Police chief...now I have only spoken to two women about this so I don't know for sure.
