Michael Bloomberg: the optimistic engineer

(This was written by a personal friend)

The Lancet

As 2019 opened, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, billionaire donor to international health and climate change causes, was considering making a run for US President. It wasn't the first time he'd contemplated residing in the West Wing, but on this occasion the awful antics of President Donald Trump offered some urgency. On March 5, however, after weeks of dangling his possible run over a public desperate for leadership, Bloomberg said no, he would not join in the pool of politicians then vying for Democratic Party endorsement. “I believe I would defeat Donald Trump in a general election”, he wrote in the news agency that bears his name, but, he added, he was “clear-eyed about the difficulty of winning the Democratic nomination in such a crowded field”.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden
