Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumCentrists entering race out of fear a centrist won't get nominated???
I can't be the only one confused by that strategy. How does the addition of centrists make a Warren nomination *less* likely? The only thing that occurs to me is that they'll attack Warren so Biden can remain above the fray, so to speak.

When you make a comment that says that if we select what "YOU" classify as a moderate, "we will lose", then your implication is that if the nominee is someone who doesn't represent some purity test, this "energized base" won't be so energized
That logic makes ZERO SENSE

(10,721 posts)But Bloomberg and Patrick aren't realistic alternatives. Maybe Patrick could have been but he's very late to the party.
Sanders doesn't stand a chance regardless. He's at his ceiling of support and it's over for him once we get to South Carolina. Warren, though, is a contender.

(43,479 posts)He was a big drug warrior, he authored the 1994 Crime Bill, was hardcore pro death penalty, anti Internet privacy, was opposed to sanctuary cities, was in favour of DADT, WAS pro Patriot Act, pro Iraq War, used to be anti marriage equality (voted for the DOMA), was pro NAFTA and pro TPP. He was instrumental in ramming through the odious Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act in 2005, as well as the 1999 repeal of GlassSteagall, and the horrid Commodity Futures Modernization Act of 2000 (re-legalising derivatives of all sorts, which are 'weapons of financial mass destruction', to quote Warren Buffett, hardly a flaming leftie) which systematically aided in setting up the playing field for the 2007-2009 financial crisis.
So, nope, not at all always a progressive, unless you are going to so dumb down the definition of progressive that it becomes utterly meaningless.
I think that he and Pete are our two best chances to defeat Rump, but Biden is far from
That is NOT bashing him at all. It is just pointing out multiple non-progressive stances and votes he has taken over the past 25-30 years (notice I am not going back all the way almost 50 years to the early 1970's.)

There's definitely a school of thought out there that sees the field lacking that unifying figure who will (magically IMO) bridge our ideological divides.

(10,721 posts)And he doesn't have the means to self-fund his campaign. Hard to see him having much impact beyond making it harder for Biden to win. I suppose he could hurt Warren's chances in New Hampshire.

BeyondGeography
(39,377 posts)But he's definitely more formidable than Bloomberg which admittedly isn't saying much. His strength with AA voters would hurt the current field across the board but because of the Bain connection he's much easier to run against from the Warren/Sanders position than from the center.

(39,377 posts)Bloomberg as the nominee is something I just can't get my brain around and I'm sure I have a lot of company. Patrick otoh is someone to take seriously on paper, even if the practical problems at this point for him (in addition to the Bain factor) are many. Good summary of those here:

(10,721 posts)Patrick could have started campaigning for Buttigieg or Harris if he's not confident in either Warren or Biden.
Or he could have joined the race 10 months ago.

(10,721 posts)...the centrist (or whatever term one prefers) vote is supposed to hurt Warren.
All I can figure is Bloombrrg will attack Warren in a way Biden won't and that Patrick might hurt Warren's odds in New Hampshire. But I think there's a greater likelihood that they'll hurt Biden or have no real impact at all.
