Mayor Pete worshiped at Rev Barber's church today (for those who don't know he headed the NAACP of NC for several years and is now head of a national anti poverty group). The press was in toe. Not only local but national. He did a great job answering questions and the part of the congregation that stayed seemed impressed (including Barber's son who is a former student of mine). He is trying no doubt about it. His campaign clearly knows what it is doing as well. I attached a link to a video of the q and a.

(83 posts)Ill be the first to admit that homophobia is a deep problem among southern African-Americans. I grew up in Mississippi and it just blows my mind that my community can be so bigoted and indifferent to oppression and discrimination, especially considering how familiar we are with being on the receiving side. Yet, sadly, it remains.
I do think and hope that this will die out with the older generations. Roll models like Dwayne Wade and Will Smith are helping, and younger people of color are increasingly rejecting this backwards outdated thinking.
This is a great move by Petes campaign that will pay dividends. I really do think he can win over southern black voters with his plans/ideas IF he can learn to relate.

(2,897 posts)People look at percentages of support on issues without adjusting for the fact that whites outnumber blacks/ by large magnitudes. As such, something like a 10-20% gap in support for Same sex marriage(for instance) still means that there are millions more white voters against it simply because one race makes up ~70% of the population and one makes up ~10%.
They also tend to ignore the history of anti-lgbt legislation and the voters behind it. The amount of political power between the two groups is staggering and it shows.
