(6,110 posts)Harris should not drop out this soon. Not before first 4 primaries are over. She has the money to keep going.
Other candidates could make mistakes and take a hit. Harris has not made any serious gaffes that I have noticed.

(43,587 posts)that is basically 98% owned by Bernie and Warren.
She really bollocksed up her healthcare roll-out, looked so confused, she never should have said she would get rid of private insurance, which she had to roll back hard..
If she went for the centre left moderate lane (but to the left of Biden, so basically the Pete lane) she could have been where Pete is (or close) or maybe even higher.
She also never should have went after Biden so hard, and finally she should have embraced her DA and AG roles more, and sold it as fighting for civil tights on the inside, basically say 'Look, if I had not done that job, we could have had a far worse, more draconian DA and AG in place.'
IF (as some say) that DA/AG background hurt her with A-A's, then why has it not hurt Biden (who was far more draconian than Harris ever was in being a hardcore drug warrior and a 'lock 'em and toss the key' type for decades as Senator?

(43,587 posts)She is one of only 2 Senators from the biggest, most powerful state in the US. AG is hardly a stepping stone to POTUS, and it is a short term gig compared to Senator.
VP, yes, obviously, and maybe governor (Newsom is term-limited so the race in 2026 will be wide open, but IF she runs for governor, then she is not going to run for POTUS in 2028, as the CA voter will go bonkers if he resigns after only 2 years.)
The only way I see her taking AG is if she wants to be governor in 2026, as THAT would be a good path to that as well. IF she did that (AG then won 2 terms as our governor, that would mean a 2036 potential POTUS run, but she would be into her 70's by then, and would be 80 at the end of 2 terms.
I just cannot see a string of over FIFTY straight years of Boomer POTUS's (Jan 1993 to Jan 2045 under that scenario, provided a Boomer won in 2028 and 2032 (which is at least fairly likely) as well, plus the even older (he missed being a Boomer by around 3 years) Biden tossed in there too). That Gen is going to simply have to yield power before then. Enough is enough. The very oldest Gen Xers would EIGHTY before they had a post Boomer POTUS, the oldest Millennials would be at retirement age. Hell, I would be (I am a 23yo Zennial, Gen Z/Millennial border born) almost 50.

(41,995 posts)I am at the tail end of boomerhood. I lived a great deal of history and the gestalt of the times is difficult to appreciate without having lived it. That might sound condescending but I promise its not.
Age and disabilities that come with it are real, and I respect the concern there. I also know many, many of us elders are extremely engaged in politics and have been through the era of unjust wars, the fight for civil rights for every marginalized group, and the globalization of everything from the economy to the sciences to the horrible outcomes of those wars. We remember illegal abortions. We remember Jim Crow. We vote with those issues in mind. Many of us are eager to help the next generations push progressivism even further than we could in the 60s and forward. We know we have more conservative age peers who are going to need encouragement. They vote too and favor some degree of familiarity with the current candidates.
Kamalas strength is her legal expertise, her intelligence and her ferocity in dealing with domestic issues. Shes got some flawed history as all do, but she has great potential. Your timeline is one possibility, and Im happy shes in the Senate for now, but I think she could take the national stage as AG, restore some respect for the office, and potentially run after, with the blessing of any of the elders who might win. I dont see her as governor of CA but I could be wrong. And as much as I think the younger candidates bring much to the table, realistically I think they wont win and will be tremendous assets if brought in and given the education (hands on) and attention they deserve.

Sen. Kamala D. Harris of California is ending her bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, according to multiple people with knowledge of the campaigns plans.
Harris had qualified for the December debate but was in single digits in both national and early-state polls.
Harris, 55, a former prosecutor, entered the race in January. Fifteen candidates remain in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination.

(43,587 posts)and flip the demographics (it would only take a couple hundred thousand.)
My wife says that all the Democratic billionaires should pool together and facilitate a Blue Wave of interstate immigration to flip
these (or most) of them permanently and completely Blue
many states would not take that many at all (due to ultra small population size, or the closeness to that they already are)
IF that happened (the main 'feeder' states would be CA (the big one), OR, WA, IL (Chicago area), MA, NY (2nd biggest), and MD)
it would eventually yield (in a perfect play)
82 Dem Senators
325 plus Dem House members
and
465 EC votes

(1,663 posts)Not with Senator Harris, of course. I'm truly disappointed in the way things turned out. The race is shaping up to look the way I feared, most. All of the candidates whom peaked my interest (exception being Sen. Warren) have pretty much been taken out, already.
I am proud of Sen. Harris. I'm going to wear my KAMALA shirt, today. I was saving it for the day of her inauguration.

(129,662 posts)Eleven months ago at the launch of our campaign in Oakland I told you all: I am not perfect. But I will always speak with decency and moral clarity and treat all people with dignity and respect. I will lead with integrity. I will speak the truth.
And thats what I have tried to do every day of this campaign. So heres the truth today.
Ive taken stock and looked at this from every angle, and over the last few days have come to one of the hardest decisions of my life.
My campaign for president simply doesnt have the financial resources we need to continue.
Im not a billionaire. I cant fund my own campaign. And as the campaign has gone on, its become harder and harder to raise the money we need to compete.
In good faith, I cant tell you, my supporters and volunteers, that I have a path forward if I dont believe I do.
So, to you my supporters, it is with deep regret -- but also with deep gratitude -- that I am suspending my campaign today.
But I want to be clear with you: I am still very much in this fight.
And I will keep fighting every day for what this campaign has been about. Justice for The People. All the people.
Our campaign has been about fighting for people whose voices have not been heard or too often ignored.
We will keep up that fight.
Lets remember: we were the first to put the injustice of inadequate teacher pay on the national agenda.
We will keep up that fight.
We were the first to demand justice for our children, declaring we would take bold executive actions to stop gun violence.
We will keep up that fight.
We were the first to demand justice for women with a plan to block unconstitutional state abortion laws.
We will keep up that fight.
And our campaign uniquely spoke to the experiences of Black women and people of color -- and their importance to the success and future of this party. Our campaign demanded no one should be taken for granted by any political party.
We will keep up that fight because no one should be made to fight alone.
And I believe our campaign showed every child in America -- regardless of their color or gender -- that there are no limits to who can lead and hold positions of power in our country.
In that way -- this campaign has been so much bigger than me.
I am extremely grateful to the hundreds of staff who moved and uprooted their lives and sacrificed time away from their families. I know our fight has been personal for each of them.
Of course I could not have done this without my husband Doug and my entire family and friends who gave up so much to embark on this journey with me and have supported me every step of the way.
And I am grateful to the thousands of volunteers and contributors who chipped in, who knocked on doors, who made calls and who put their faith and trust in me. It has been the honor of my life to be your candidate.
And I want to be clear: although I am no longer running for President, I will do everything in my power to defeat Donald Trump and fight for the future of our country and the best of who we are.
I know you will too. So lets do that together.
Lets keep fighting for the America we believe in, an America free of injustice. An America that we know we can be unburdened by what has been.
Thank you.
Kamala

If you think about it - this is Biden's 3rd time and Sanders' second time, but ever since the 2010 "Citizen's United" decision, the ante has been upped into the stratosphere for anyone trying to run with respect to the financial requirements - and in this case, just to get through a large primary, let alone what will come next for a general.

matters relating to her because he was Obamas VP. If she wanted Obamas coalition, then insulting Biden was also insulting Obama. Thats how it felt to me, and it seems to reflect in the polls why she never caught on.
It is Kamala herself who made race an issue. Ive seen others here mischaracterize the point being made about her Indian-American heritage, but no surprise.
