Looking for an edge, Klobuchar chases Trump voters

Politico

GORHAM, N.H. — Sen. Amy Klobuchar recognizes that Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren are going to clean up here. But she sees a path to success by finding voters to whom they have little appeal — like those who are so independent-minded they voted for both Barack Obama and Donald Trump.

It shows in every piece of her strategy, from the towns she visits to her stump speech. And in a state where the biggest voting bloc, 43 percent, is independents, it’s a game plan her campaign thinks will create an Election Day surprise.

Klobuchar’s state director said they’re focused on places other candidates have avoided, especially the towns that went to Obama in 2008 and 2012, but then voted for Trump in 2016.

“Those are really a lot of communities that tend to be bellwethers or communities that have an impact on New Hampshire outcomes,” said Scott Merrick. “Whether they're Democrats and they'll vote for more moderate candidates or they're truly undeclared voters who mix it up.”

These voters in the Middle West defected to Trump because he portrayed himself as an economic populist …...Trump railed against NAFTA , advocated universal healthcare , and an end to stupid wars …...They voted for Obama twice , so it is hard to argue they were motivated by race hatred …..

It seems to me that more folks running for the Dem. nomination should be trying to
attract DEM voters and spending less time trying to enamor themselves to R voters!

Based on the polls it seems that the R's are not going to vote D no matter what, so if
these candidates are so interested in appealing to R's, maybe they should consider running
as one!

I would like a candidate that represents Dem. ideals, and speaks to Dem. values. Not a
Republican light. How many D's stay home again in Nov. if the choice is really just a light weight
Repub. with a D behind their name????

Having Klobuchar and Yang going after some others is a good thing. If we hope to gain the Senate we need candidates that can create a path towards the Democrats.

(and there are many) is they refer to people who identify as republicans, whereas I believe a lot of republicans have become independents or refuse to say they are republicans anymore.

I do agree that our candidates should run as Democrats and represent Democratic ideals, but appealing to Independents or undecideds is not necessarily a bad thing, as long as they are not compromising their Democratic values. I think it is more a matter of communicating those values better, something that Democrats have not always done well.

Watched her operate in Rural Minnesota in the Reddest of the Counties. She knows how to connect and where to go to make those connections.

Sad to say,so many Campaign Consultants refuse to ditch the 13 states strategy because that is the easy route. Go for the Numbers.

showed that the way to win a national election is a 50 state strategy.

I agree, Amy seems to be running an excellent campaign. She has been very impressive.

Sorry, all sounds pretty lame to me.
We have Biden offering that he would have an R as a VP!?!

Just seems to me there are way too many D candidates who are worried about
getting votes from R's than they are from getting them from D's!

There are a LOT of D voters out there! Just need to get them motivated and to the
polls. But, offering them the same ole, same ole, ain't gonna do it! been there, done that!
Remember 2016?

How about they try appealing to the Dem base, and not this imaginary "Center/Moderate"
AKA Right/Conservative side of the party (Repub Lite) group. They are not going to vote D,
and, not in the numbers needed to beat Drumph!

Sorry if this opinion hurts folks fee fee's, but this is the fact of it.
