Democratic Primaries

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg saw a 6-point bump in the latest Hill-HarrisX survey of the Democratic presidential primary.
The nationwide poll, which was released Friday, shows Bloomberg up from 5 percent to 11 percent support for the nomination nationally. The former New York City mayor is now in a dead heat for third place with top-tier candidate, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), who also received 11 percent support.
Biden, meanwhile, continues to lead the Democratic field with 28 percent followed by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) at 16 percent.
Former South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg saw another slight dip, after slipping 4 percentage points in mid-December. In the latest survey, he now has 6 percent support, down from 5 percent from the Dec. 13-14 poll.
Bloombergs rise in the latest Hill-HarrisX survey comes in spite of his late entry into the 2020 race and the fact that he hasnt appeared in any of the Democratic primary debates.
Bloomberg has chosen an unorthodox campaign strategy, making the decision not to raise money and instead deciding to fund his own campaign. This has disqualified him from taking the debate stage under rules from the Democratic National Convention.
Under DNC rules, candidates must reach certain polling and fundraising thresholds.
However, prior to announcing his bid in November, Bloomberg launched an ad buy totaling roughly $19.4 million over 90 local markets across the country. After making his campaign official, he also rolled out a 60-second spot as part of his $31.5 million media blitz.
Bloomberg's multimillion-dollar ad expenditure has made him a prime target for his fellow rivals.

Hey, I TOLD you all that Michael Bloomberg was going to buy his way into being our 2020 Democratic Nominee.
Yes, I am a political genius, thank you very much.
Side Note: Air continues to escape from the Mayor Pete Buttigieg campaign as he drops further down in the polls. Seems Senator Amy Klobuchar's criticism of him lacking experience from the last debate has left a mark. Yes, I realize other candidates have dropped also, but Mayor Pete is now essentially a third tier candidate, trailing Front runner Biden and second tier candidates Sanders, Warren, and (in this poll at least) Bloomberg.
This poll aside, all three poll trackers show this trend:

(7,277 posts)You know Bluewater, you are really an asshole How dare you challenge the smugly complacent with some dazzling Mark Penn / Scot Rasmussen magic? With Bloomberg way up, and Warren way down, private equity could do worse than head back down to their wine caves to pick out some rare bubbly for a "special occasion". the polls are what the polls are © Bluewater 2019 ... coming soon to a brokered convention near you!

(22,877 posts)Extended family in Minnesota is seeing a lot of Bloomberg and Steyer.. and he really is that case of name recognition. Does not have a chance in hell.. I believe that to my core. He could really make a difference with that money he is throwing around getting a Democratic congress elected.

(5,376 posts)Biden, Sanders, Warren and Bloomberg all have the money to stay in the race to the very end and all four are capable of meeting the 15% threshold to be assigned delegates.

(68,586 posts)This is an outlier...there will be a clear winner...and consider that we must remove Trump ...a brokered convention would lead to a loss...it always does...so it is not something to strive for and once the front runner / nominee is clear...only Sanders will stay in... and he will achieve nothing this time.

(5,376 posts)Facts are what the facts are.
Biden? Front runner and in it to the end.
Sanders? Super strong base, tons of money, in it to the end.
Warren? Only woman left standing, good fundraising, in it to the end.
Bloomberg? lol BILLIONAIRE saturating the Super Tuesday states with very good pro-Democratic adds, in it to the end.
So, don't shoot the messenger.
With 4 such very strong campaigns, it is VERY likely that no single candidate will get a majority of delegates on the first ballot.
Pointing this out isn't "rooting" for anything, it's just being honest and facing reality.

I guess we all have our dreams. Im afraid yours, a brokered convention with Sanders or Warren emerging as the nominee is not going to come true. But keep on keeping on.

(5,376 posts)Ignore the reality that we are headed to a brokered convention if you choose.
Because THE POLLS ARE WHAT THE POLLS ARE, and those polls don't show any candidate managing to get 50% of the delegates by the convention.
Why? Simply because our Democratic primaries are not winner take all.
Who will be the nominee out of a brokered convention? I have no idea at this point, but looking at his very excellent pro-Democratic adds, I can see super delegates getting behind Michael Bloomberg when push comes to shove. Warren or Sanders would have to outperform expectations to overcome that.
In any case, it seems some people rather stick their heads in the sand then face the political reality.
Oh well, to each their own.
But the proof is in the pudding once voting starts.

Or, maybe they just dont think itll happen? Is there room for that in your analysis?
Oh well have fun. But it wont be as much as Im going to have when the BC doesnt happen.

Well, thanks for sharing YOUR analysis too. And for making it so personal towards me. lol
But didn't I just point out Michael Bloomberg would probably garner the super delegate support in a brokered convention?
Why, yes, I did.

(5,376 posts)The Republican primaries were winner take all, so Trump managed to sleaze his way in despite polling well below 50%.
In our Democratic primaries, delegates will be divided up between candidates getting at least 15% on a district by district basis, so a candidate does not even have to have 15% support state-wide to get some delegates.
Bloomberg's entry and rise in the primaries almost guarantees a brokered convention.

In any case, Mayor Pete's descent to the third tier of candidates is shown in many other polls, just take a look at the 538 and The Economists and RCP POLLS to see this trend:

(59,504 posts)In the latest survey, he now has 6 percent support, down from 5 percent from the Dec. 13-14 poll.
Now, I realize that the unexpected high for Bloomberg is justifiably the big story, that sentence is mind boggling. (I clicked on their older story that they had a link for - he really was at 5% - so it's not a typo where he had been at, say, 7%. As to Bloomberg, his numbers have not been near that level anywhere else - though there were very few polls recently. It will be interesting to see when they come in.

(673 posts)I'll believe it when I see it across more polls. Right now it's just an outlier result for him.
I'm interested to see some recent Iowa and NH polls though to see how much Pete has slid in those. I expect it to be a lot given his corresponding slide in national polls.
I actually expect that you're going to see Biden leading in some of those upcoming state polls.
