Appearing on CBS This Morning, Abrams said the country needs to start evolving what the face of leadership looks like.
Her comments come amid speculation that she is being considered as a running mate for former vice president Joe Biden, a white male, who appears on the cusp of announcing his candidacy.
A Biden spokesman last week dismissed rumors of a pre-cooked ticket as false, and during Wednesdays interview, Abrams said she and Biden had talked but that serving as his running mate was not the core issue.
Appearing later Wednesday morning on ABCs The View, Abrams said she is open to all options, including her own White House bid.
I do not know if Im running. Im thinking about everything, Abrams said. She suggested that if she runs for president, it would not be with the aim of winding up as someone elses choice for vice president. I think you dont run for second place, Abrams said.

Why The Joe Biden-Stacey Abrams Rumors Wont Go Away
Abrams is testing her message nationally and plotting her next steps, and Abrams and Biden aides denials arent quieting the rumors of a team-up.

What is Stacey Abrams going to do next?
It didnt take long, after Abrams work to expand Georgias Democratic electorate translated to a near-miss campaign in the states gubernatorial election, for that question to loom over the early phase of the 2020 Democratic primary for president. The intrigue went into overdrive with a tweet suggesting she might seek the nomination herself, and with her team insisting that nothing, including a run for the US Senate seat occupied by Georgia Republican David Perdue, is off the table. On Wednesday, she did another round of TV to say again: Her options are open.
The possibility, though, that people are most obsessing over right now: whether or not shes going to team up with Joe Biden. Rumors of Biden and Abrams talking about a joint ticket at the start of a potential Biden presidential campaign have been rampant over the last week, after the two met for lunch. Aides to both have publicly denied that a grand plan exists.
But the whispers havent died out. Two sources familiar with the matter say that, no matter what others say, Bidens team has pitched Abrams on the idea of being Bidens running mate at the outset of a 2020 campaign. Those sources said the idea was brought up to attract high-level operatives and donors. Neither source was aware of Abrams response, nor whether she was currently considering the proposition. Abrams on Wednesday told CBS News that she and Biden talked about a lot of things, but the vice presidency was not the core issue.

(4,558 posts)True, when asked, not many today will say they care about gender, or won't vote for women.
Likewise true, that it shouldn't matter at all.
However, much like today's version of racism, today's Misogyny has evolved into something less obvious, but much more insidious.
Sure people are willing to vote for women, but there's still many who hold women, just as they hold other minorities to a much higher standard for the exact same level of acceptance.
Really, just look at the 2016 run for POTUS... So many were willing to accept and turn a blind eye to all the worst things about Cheetolini while condemning/attacking Hillary for every minor fucking thing, especially when compared to the things he was given passes on.
Had Cheetolini been a female with the exact same "faults", he would have NEVER been elected.
Had Cheetolini been a racial minority, he would have NEVER been elected.
Male privilege/white privilege is a real thing.

(4,187 posts)Voters care very much about gender. They insist on a male president. But no one accuses DUers who systematically support male candidates and sometimes even go so far as to attack female candidates of caring only about whats between a candidates legs. Only DUers who want a female candidate are accused of that.
Bottom line: if youre a sexist jerk, youre a sensible person who cares only about making sure the best person gets elected. If, on the other hand, youre a feminist, or youre simply sick and tired of the overwhelming sexism of Americans, you are the real sexist. Up is down, and black is white.
Enjoy Trumps second term because thats what mansplaining to feminists about how we live in a post-sexist utopia, and taking women for granted are going to get you. At least, the president will be male, so we will know that pro-female bias played no part in his election!
ETA: welcome to DU. Enjoy your time here.

(39,968 posts)ID characteristics should be the last thing on our minds. Who will best take the fight to the Republicans and be most likely to change the economy for the better? Thats what will bring people out to vote. ID is not disqualifying, either. Obamas two GE wins should have taught us that. And HRCs gender didnt stop her from winning the PV by 3 million.

(7,448 posts)I'm waiting for someone to actually explain why she is more qualified than the other candidates or even has the experience to be President or VP? Race and gender alone doesn't qualify someone for the job but that's how all this is getting framed in the media.

(46,154 posts)It was floating out there for days in the national press before the Biden people put out the denial, after Abrams had already said no, it was not true. I just watched Stacey Abrams on the View and she definitely did not sound at all like she was down with it.
The 'hype' (I would not personally label it as hype) comes from her amazing speaking ability (as evidenced by the SOTU rebuttal) and the fact, if not for election fraud and voter suppression, she would probably be the first African-American female governor in the history of our country, and from a Red southern state to boot.

The story was out there for days before the Biden team shot it down.
In today's hyper-responsive politics, 4 days or so (at least 4) is an eternity. Look at how fast people like AOC respond to things.

You seem very invested in making this something it isn't, and it's all on Biden for some strange reason. It doesn't matter how AOC handles her twitter responses. That has nothing to do with this.

The Hill itself (and other news sites like CNN) was starting to talk about a possible early VP announcement from Biden 10 days ago ( on the 18th ), which was 4 days after Abrams and Biden met on the 14th. It did not only focus on Abrams, but did mention their meeting, and said ' the two did not formally discuss the vice presidency during that meeting.'
Also, I was not singularly focusing on AOC at all, she is just the a good example of how rapid response today's politics has become. There are dozens (hundreds even?) of politicians who respond to things within hours, minutes even, not days.

"We talked about whether I was thinking about running. We talked about whether he was thinking about running. BUT WE DID NOT HAVE THAT CONVERSATION AND EVERYTHING ELSE IS PURE SPECULATION MADE UP BY SOMEBODY ELSE."
That is Abram's quote. Pure speculation on your part. That is what Abram's said. Her words. The video is there.
Who cares what CNN speculated about, or you or anyone else for that matter. Abrams told you that you are wrong. Who cares about someone's "rapid" response. Why should Biden be forced to talk about a casual lunch conversation with a colleague just because some are trying to "speculate"
It was also widely reported that Abrams had met with several candidates. So she also met with Biden. So what.
Your speculation is wrong.

(46,154 posts)who were floating the ideas of both (1) naming a VP early (and it didn't have to be Abrams per se) and (2) running as a 1 term candidate.
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/21/us/politics/joe-biden-2020-election.html
But none would carry the impact of naming a running mate early or vowing to serve just one term.
Two of Mr. Bidens closest advisers, Steve Ricchetti and Mike Donilon, have floated both possibilities in recent weeks. And they have been egged on by some Democratic lawmakers, who have urged the Biden associates to strongly consider the one-term pledge to immediately defuse the question about his age.
snip
I am sure that (on this I hope we can agree) that there was no official offer, no hard pitch offered up by Biden at their meeting. But the entire concept of both ideas (regardless of who the VP would be) is not a figment of peoples' imaginations. And again, my quote from her ('We talked about a lot of things but that was not the core issue') was from a live show, CBS This Morning, on March 27th, 3 days after the live show (in Los Angeles, with Jamil Smith, on the 24th) that you posted.

So who cares what gossipy bits and pieces you think have some hidden meaning. Abrams met with several candidates. So she was meeting with people, Biden just happened to be one. So what.
Lets not call Abrams a liar. I believe her. Time to accept her words and move on.

(4,558 posts)My primary support is going to anyone that I can feel will have the BIGGEST chance of getting us those required 270 electoral college votes that isn't BS.
She is currently my #2 choice. Beto gives us a chance to flip Texas (which alone, going by the 2016 map, would have won the Presidency with the 38 electoral votes). She brings Georgia to the table of possibilities.
A Beto/Abrams or Abrams/Beto Ticket would be delicious! The thought of Cheetolini, the RNC, and their super PAC's having to divert tons of election year cash to 2 huge states that they otherwise wouldn't have to defend in just tickles me to no end.

(147,306 posts)In 2016, they decided that Hillary Clinton should be the nominee. She won the popular vote in the General Election. In 2020, however, I do not see any of the primary candidates who are women who have her history and stature. I do not believe that wishes on the parts of particularly vocal Democrats will have much impact when it comes right down to the primary elections and caucuses in the states.
There's really only a couple of candidates with the kind of name recognition and prominence that Hillary had in 2016. Both of those who do are men. I suspect we'll have a male presidential candidate and a female VP candidate when the convention adjourns. If I had to guess right now, I'd say Biden and Harris are the most likely pairing.

It's trendy to say that Sanders will get fully vetted this time around. Biden will get the same scrutiny after he declares, and the current polling from a year ahead of the primaries may or may not hold up. We'll see if Warren, Kloubuchar, or Harris can succeed in a national race and a big field. I actually think the biggest factor in whether a female candidate wins is female voters - will any of the current candidates get major support from women? If they do, the math changes.
