Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumMike Bloomberg Spends $10 Million on Super Bowl Ad to F--k With Trump
Does Michael Bloomberg have a snowballs chance in hell of winning the Democratic nomination? On the one hand, the billionaire and former New York City mayor is gaining in the polls. On the other, hes solidly in fifth place, behind Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and Pete Buttigieg, based on a RealClearPolitics average of national Democratic polling. In other words, who the hell knows. One thing thats crystal clear, though? Should Bloomberg make it to the general election, hell spend the entirety of the proceeding five months, and untold millions, with a singular focus: trolling the s--t out of Donald Trump, an initiative well get a preview of come Super Bowl Sunday.
Rather than beat around the bush re: its intentions, Bloombergs own campaign told the New York Times, of the 60-second, $10 million ad spot it bought to air during the game: The biggest point is getting under Trumps skin. By taking the fight to Trump, spokesman Michael Frazier said, the ad is part of Mikes strategy of running a national campaign that focuses on states where the general election will be decided, parts of the country that are often overlooked.
Mr. Bloomberg has made targeting Mr. Trump a core element of his ad strategy. Before he announced his candidacy, he pledged to spend $100 million on ads criticizing the president. And since he launched his bid, his campaign has unloaded a barrage of Facebook attack ads in general-election swing states, seeking to erode support for Mr. Trump by highlighting what Mr. Bloomberg calls broken promises on infrastructure, health care and dysfunction in Washington.
The Super Bowl ad is a show of financial force rarely seen in presidential politics. Though some campaigns have made local advertising buys during past Super Bowls, a national buy has often been out of reach, given the expense. It is also usually viewed as wasteful to pay to reach a 50-state audience rather than buying ads in the swing states where campaigns would prefer to target their message. But Mr. Bloomberg is running an unconventional primary campaign with a heavy national emphasis, choosing to avoid the four states that vote first in February and instead focusing his efforts on Super Tuesday on March 3, when 14 states will vote.

(58,785 posts)have a season chairing my book group. We all suggest and vote on what we're going to read, anyway, and there's no real power to run away with, just canceling for weather and organizing snacks. And I can guarantee we'd never put up with being patted down before we were allowed to enter. So not to worry.

(5,313 posts)This year's Super Bowl will take place in four weeks. Yes, you obviously don't watch sports, but I won't kill you. I don't watch horse racing, golf, or opera either. We all have different interests and that's what makes for a wonderful world.
