Nina Turner: "Joe Biden has repeatedly let us down"

The State

While Bernie Sanders has always stood up for African Americans, Joe Biden has repeatedly let us down
BY NINA TURNER

In choosing between the two Democratic Party candidates atop the polls, African American voters have a consequential decision to make:

Will our community side with former Vice President Joe Biden, who has repeatedly betrayed black voters to side with Republican lawmakers and undermine our progress? Or will we stand with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and a movement that has been fighting for racial and economic justice since the civil rights era?

This critical choice is illustrated by the key differences between Biden and Sanders – which began at the beginning of their respective careers.

As a recent NBC News headline said of Biden’s time in the Senate: “Biden didn’t just compromise with segregationists. He fought for their cause.” The NBC report quoted the NAACP’s legal director saying that one Biden-backed measure “heaves a brick through the window of school integration.”

Turner is National Co-Chair of the Sanders Campaign.

If Bernie supporters didn't support Hillary, that is definitely part of the problem of why she lost. Of course Repug voter suppression played a huge part and so did Russia - and our fucked up electoral college. But this isn't a single answer question - there are lots of facts involved, including Bernie supporters voting for Stein or even drumpf.

11. 'I know Joe's heart': Why black voters are backing Joe Biden:
Sun Jan 12, 2020, 12:04 PM
Jan 2020
https://www.democraticunderground.com/1287363712

https://apnews.com/86ac620dd00045dc9a8f21900ee4cfdc

People who have known Biden for decades speak to the depth of good will he has among black voters. They talk of Biden as someone who has known and courted black voters for more than a half century. That, they say, could make it difficult for other candidates who hope to persuade some black voters to change their minds.

“He knew our plight, he knew how we felt,” said Richard “Mouse” Smith, who met Biden as a kid in Wilmington, Delaware’s black community where Biden worked as a lifeguard during college.

“He walked through gangs, learned all nicknames, he was part of this community,” said Smith, who remains one of Biden’s oldest and closest friends. “Joe had to be accountable to the black leadership in this city. We made him.”

Biden has credited his early years in Delaware politics as formative, particularly the community known as “The Bucket,” the largely African American, downtrodden northeast Wilmington neighborhood that was home to housing projects, crime, drugs and violence. He returned to the area as a young lawyer during the 1968 Wilmington riots after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. He represented the community of New Castle as a county councilman, supporting public housing and opposing highway projects he saw as potentially harmful to black neighborhoods.

After his election to the U.S. Senate in 1972, Biden remained a fixture in the black community, a regular at the annual NAACP dinner and a commencement speaker at historically black Delaware State University. He talked to everyone, including the wait staff, according to people who knew him at the time. Most important, he listened, recalled Delaware State’s provost and incoming president, Tony Allen, who served as Biden’s speechwriter and special assistant when Biden was in the Senate.

“It almost seemed like he had a unique familiarity with people who might not have been advantaged,” said Allen. “He was always the last one to leave, making sure he connected with people and knew what their issues were. It’s kind of why a lot of African Americans affectionately call him ‘Uncle Joe.’ We feel like he’s got our back, he’s gonna consult with us and make the right decision.”

Sun Jan 12, 2020, 12:33 PM

Honestly I don't think Bernie can win in a general election - the right will hang that socialist tag on him; his policies and concepts won't play well with people who aren't informed or able for various reasons to think beyond their kitchen table issues, and that will be enough to turn off any swing voters that might have gone this way - causing lower turn-out or opposition vote. He has some good ideas and I would love it if he would retire and try mentoring the younger generation in some of his ideas, and NOT split the loyalty of the Dems at least this time around. That he did not support Hillary IMO was a big problem in 2016 and hurt her, and eventually us. I didn't love her but she would have been far and away a better leader than the POS we have now. And we have to stop "eating our own"!!

One thing we have to really work on - Democrats tend to speak in white papers which no one remembers - the GOP speaks in bumper stickers which everyone remembers. the pResident's trick of sticking a nickname on everyone works because that is what people remember! They don't remember the issues HRC stood for they remember "Crooked Hillary". Everyone on that side of the aisle remembered it and spouted it non stop. And Democrats need to find some good marketing folks who can name things appropriately. Remember the estate tax being called the "death tax" by the right? Yeah . . .they know how to appeal to emotions and we NEED that too! I plan to watch this group https://lincolnproject.us/ - they have the know how to work this but we need a candidate who can win!

He thought it would inflame racial hostilities. It's the ultimate in hypocrisy for Nina Turner to attack VP Biden on the issue when her candidate has done f%&k-all for African Americans since he was a college student. He refused to vote for the politicians that passed the Civil Rights Act and following legislation. In other words, he couldn't care less about the voting rights of Nina Turner and her ilk - he only started voting when he could vote for himself, never mind national candidates that championed Nina Turner's civil rights!
