The Media started it and now are gleeful that it is spiraling out of control. It makes good news and brings in money while at the same time casting disbersions on a candidate they dispise. The framing and tonal demeanor displayed with every question posed to Senator Sanders oozed with hatred. I could actually feel it through my computer screen. It's painful and so unnecessary. I believe Bernie absolutely. It's too far out of character for him to either lie or make such an absurd statement. I don't even have to rely on the fact that he is inherantly honest or the evidence of all his past behavior and statements.

I believer Senator Warren thinks she heard him say it, and now has backed herself into a corner and can't recall the context. Bernard Sanders doesn't lie, but Senator Warren could actually have a less than photographic memory. It's easier to remember what you said than to rememhber exactly what the other person said. What you verbalize you remember better than what goes in and out of the ears.

They made their move to have maximum effect on the Iowa caucuses. This was a planned attack. As to the hashtags that followed I have no comment. Senator Warren's Twitter feed was the outcome of the original outrage. The anger should be at the media that wants a fight and the trolls that promote it. The media was the trigger. What followed is the resault of the low our country has sunk to. Why was Senator Warren unwilling to even shake Senator Sanders hand after the debate. She is feeling the shame.

The media hates the progressive movement and will do anything to derail it. The best chance they have is to get us fighting with each other. Trying to bring Senator Sanders down at Senator Warren's expense is a classic example of what the elites that control the country will stoop to.

To a woman, that phrase "a woman can't win" will resonate, it will stick in her mind, it will be there because we hear it all the time.

To an older man? It's just a thing they say, it doesn't mean anything to them because it isn't about them.

It was just a conversation, probably one of many and what we recall from such conversations isn't the back and forth of mundane conversation, it is those things that evoke a a response, something that resonates. For her, this would have done that. For most women, this would have resonated and been a hook for that recall.

I think that it not only shows her truth, but it shows her strength. I also thought Sanders' response was completely predictable because, if you listen to the audio, he's clearly defensive and dismissive and I applaud Elizabeth for not smacking away his pointing finger, not sure I could have resisted.

31. It was a private conversation
Thu Jan 16, 2020, 10:07 AM
Jan 2020

It was intended to be a private conversation. It should have remained a private conversation. Over the course of two hours I am willing to believe that Sanders said something that left Warren with the impression that Sanders was then pessimistic about the chances that a woman could defeat Donald Trump in 2020. This was an open and unguarded candid discussion and Sanders had every reason to believe that things said in confidence that night would not later be betrayed. I do not know if Warren decided to break that confidence or whether that was done without authorization to a reporter by one of Warren's close confidants.

But what ended up going public was reported as very blunt statement lacking in any nuance or context. Just on the face of it that was a low blow, because even if one believes Warren regarding the bottom line, that released statement cast Sanders in the worst possible light at a key point in the primary process. Again, giving Warren the benefit of the doubt, I do not believe for an instant that Sanders blurted out a comment like that outside of a larger context. He once urged Warren to run for President. He believes that women can and should run for the highest offices in the land, including the presidency. Their conversation that night was focused on who could defeat Donald Trump in 2020. Two years later they may have differing recollections about was meant by what was said in which sub set of an in depth two hour long personal conversation.

I don't accuse Warren of lying, but realistically, politically, Sanders was never going to get a chance to rewind that tape and revisit the context and full true meaning of any of the words he spoke that night in private. We live in a sound bite political world. It is not an option for Sanders to now say, "Well, from a purely technical standpoint Warren may be correct about that conversation, however what her statement fails to convey was the whole of my opinions that I expressed that night, and taken out of its original context, her summary of what I said is misleading at best. It does not accurately summarize our conversation" That would not fly in today's political world. It would end up as "Sanders confirms that he does not believe a woman can win the presidency." The fact that Warren accosted Sanders after the debate into an open microphone made matters for both them even worse. Sanders was right to wave off that public conversation for a later private moment, if anything truly remains private in politics anymore.

By breaking their former personal.confidence in the way that she did, Warren publicly put Sanders into an untenable political position. If Warren was forced into this action by an unauthorized leak by one of her confidants, at the very least she should have reiterated that she knows that Sanders has been supportive of Women running for any office in the land in the past, herself included, and that she is confident that he will again in the future, but they simply differed in their assessment of the type candidate who could defeat Donald Trump in 2020.

I wish Warren at least had done that. I hope the latest news on impeachment keeps this political spat from remaining high profile in the news cycle for the next week. I don't want to see Warren trashed over this. I don't want to see Sanders trashed over this. Neither are perfect political beings incapable of any making missteps. Each of their chances at the nomination should not be disproportionately effected by this incident. This hasn't been the finest political hour for either of them but I would gladly back either of them for President should one of them become our nominee. Fundamentally I know that they both have the best interests of our nation at heart. After the current 24 hour news cycle I will not take part in prolonging this "controversy" any further.

Fri Jan 17, 2020, 09:17 AM
Jan 2020

No, I don't think that valid criticism and vetting of Senator Sanders is an "attack on US." That's the kind of groupthink that I associate with Trump supporters - which is why they will never, ever believe anything about him that isn't flattering.

However, I am far more sensitive to the genuine attacks and smears on Warren. I won't say that "she is us" because I have healthy emotional boundaries. She is also someone who asks for intellectual evaluation and not blind lockstep allegiance. Besides, if she ever tried to say anything like that, the knives and the accusations of 'CULT" would come out in a heartbeat. Especially from Sanders supporters who feel personally betrayed that she decided to run for POTUS, rather than simply cheerleading his candidacy.

I added a comment to my earlier post to make it clear that I strongly disagree with this kind of "dear leader" hero worship of politicians.

Telling people that they aren't allowed to criticize politicians - that criticism of a politician is the same as an "attack" on the people - is a fascist approach.

73. Authoritarianism:
Fri Jan 17, 2020, 09:38 AM
Jan 2020
Simply put, autocratic (authoritarian) leaders use, and often abuse, their coercive power to get people to do their bidding. They use their power to punish to force people to follow them. Rather than earning respect and loyalty, they demand it, believing they’re entitled to it by their position. They tend to make unilateral decisions instead of consulting with and listening to people with the expertise relevant to good decision-making.
..........................................................
Another problem with autocratic leadership is that it lends itself to poor decision-making. When a decision is complex and important, it pays to consult and listen to people with relevant expertise, yet autocratic leaders tend to make unilateral decisions.
