MSNBC Slammed for Featuring 'Body Language Expert' Who Calls Sanders a Liar
MSNBC and weekend anchor Joy Ann Reid came under fire from progressives and members of the Bernie Sanders campaign Saturday after airing a segment with a "body language expert" whociting "eye level" and the turtling of the 2020 candidate's shouldersaccused Sanders of lying earlier this week when he denied ever telling Sen. Elizabeth Warren that a woman could not be president.
"This is unhinged," tweeted Meagan Day, a staff writer for Jacobin magazine, in response to the segment. "Genuinely divorced from reality."
The guest on Reid's show "AM Joy" was Janine Driver, who promotes herself as an "international communications expert" and the owner and president of the Body Language Institute. The segment sparked howls of criticism aimed at Driver, Reid, and the network.
While both the Warren and Sanders camp have appeared desirous to put the dust-up about what was or wasn't said during a private 2018 meeting behind them, Daywho openly supports Sanders as the better and more progressive candidatewas among those unwilling to disarm so long as the corporate media outlets continue to air such blatant and irrresponsible attacks to their massive audiences.

(5,186 posts)only 6% of polling calls result in a response that can be included in a survey.
The rest is done by interpolation, and weighting. I've come to the conclusion that both polling, and story-driving on media, is designed to keep candidates spending as much money as possible, mostly on TV ads.

(21,803 posts)But the reason no one trusts the media is because Donald Trump is President. If the media were doing their job, they would have exposed this clown early and often. Instead, they saturated the airwaves with his rants and made him seem legitimate.

(11,371 posts)humans are good at picking up involuntary cues. It's evolutionary. Unfortunately, humans are equally evolved at lying and cover up. If you think you're getting more than 50% right .. you're probably inflating your own ability. And the truly dangerous part comes in with those individuals (bosses, managers, LE officers) that think they're right all the time. (and have the "evidence" to back up their preconceptions)

(11,371 posts)in critical fields like intelligence and law enforcement. (again, people "sell" themselves on their ability and accuracy) And the damage done there can be somewhat "mitigated" by the fact that these areas often require evidence to back up the "hunches" that it's practitioners form. But make no mistake, the readings that these people make are in fact guesses or hunches. I know people who also make claims for the ability to interpret dreams -- and happily call it a "science." IT ISN'T.

In addition, machine learning(AI) is able to read body language in real time. Check this out.

Just recently, CNN did an article on how some companies are using AI to conduct interviews based on, guess what, body language. Here.

But go ahead and continue comparing it to interpreting dreams if you like. It is a real thing and it is used in the intelligence community, and even computers are learning how to master it.

(11,371 posts)(and some reputable people at that -- my analogy to dream interpretation was probably ill chosen. a spur of the moment thought.)
But those same people (at least the reputable ones) are saying that it's no where NEAR any kind of solid or predictable accuracy. And given that I'll stick with my characterization of a good guess or a hunch. False positives are still WAY to high for any type of critical screening or decision making. And most of them (even it's strongest proponents) are VERY uncomfortable with it's use in LE (much less a court of law) for exactly these limitations.
And finally -- the idea that ANYONE thinks this is a good area for AI learning ..... WOW!
(knowing what we do about AI learning -- do YOU think this is good science?)
