Why we don’t provide free lunch for all school children.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

5. But ... pizza?

My kids never ate the school lunch. My daughter complained that they served "gray meat," and my son was an impossibly picky eater anyway. So homemade school lunches were packed every day in my house, and attempts were made to make them as nutritious as was feasible for kids' rotten tastes.* (Exception: they sometimes opted for the school lunch when it was, guess what, pizza.)

Even in those days (the 80s and 90s), the traditional "school lunch lady"–made meals prepared in a a back kitchen of the cafeteria were replaced with pre-packaged, corporate food. E.g., commercial frozen pizza or chicken tenders. And even in those days, all children who qualified for free or reduced lunch received it (and that was a good number of students).

School lunch today usually means pre-prepared foods from large corporate food giants, or sometimes more local food processing companies. I don't see this as being particularly progressive. What would be really progressive would be re-focusing on Michelle Obama's efforts to require more nutritious foods for kids at school (and hey, give them more than 15 minutes to eat it before being shuttled out to recess).

* Both those kids grew up to be committerd vegans, and both have stuck with it for many years. It's not a choice I particularly approve of. But go figure.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

This was back in the 1950s. I already disliked asparagus, but when the nun discovered me stuffing it into the empty milk carton, she stood over me until I ate it all.

Gray meat was a staple, I've heard it called mystery meat. It was all puke-worthy.

After that, I always took lunch.

primary today, I would vote for:

Let's consider it an accomplishment when they actually do it, not while they're "considering" it.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden
