As Primary Voting Nears, Joe Biden Remains Strong With Black Democrats

Joe Biden’s top rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination are facing a stark notion: After a year of trying, they might not be able to dent his solid support among black voters.

Black voters account for a significant bloc of the Democratic electorate in a swath of delegate-rich Southern states holding contests in March. Barack Obama in 2008 and Hillary Clinton in 2016 swept the deep South, leading to their delegate advantages and highlighting the significance of black support in national Democratic politics.

Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina will conclude their early contests by the end of February. Among them, only South Carolina, where voting will take place Feb. 29, has a significant portion of its electorate comprising black voters. Mr. Biden’s campaign sees the state as a potential linchpin to his primary campaign. The thinking goes, according to his aides and surrogates, that even if he stumbles in any of the first three states, a South Carolina victory would serve as a slingshot heading into March, when most delegates are up for grabs.

Nationally, some 33% of black Democratic primary voters are backing Mr. Biden, according to a January poll by Quinnipiac University. Mr. Sanders was 9 percentage points behind at 24% support, while Ms. Warren was at 8%. Some 12% of black Democrats said they didn’t know whom they would support.

Mr. Biden secured two additional endorsements from black members of Congress over the past week, bringing his total to 11—more than any of his rivals. During Sunday services at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Columbia, Mr. Biden was introduced by Rep. Terri Sewell (D., Ala.), one of the lawmakers who recently endorsed him. The former vice president then offered a message on faith to the congregation. “Dr. King didn’t give up on the dream, and I’m asking you all, don’t give up on it. Don’t give up now. We can defeat this moment of hate,” Mr. Biden said.
