Former Vice President Joe Biden is leading the Democratic presidential primary field, according to a new national poll.
Biden is supported by 24 percent of registered Democrats and independents, based on a Reuters-Ipsos poll released Thursday.
Biden is closely trailed by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who has 20 percent support, based on the poll.
Both candidates saw an uptick in support from a Reuters-Ipsos poll released last month that showed Biden with 19 percent support and Sanders at 14 percent support.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) maintained her third place spot behind Sanders, at 12 percent. Its a 3-point increase in support for Warren since last months poll.
Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloombergs support increased by 6 points to 10 percent, leapfrogging ahead of former South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg at 7 percent. Buttigiegs support increased 1 point since last months poll.

(15,462 posts)Not sure if it's failing. He' doing better than last month. It's really time for Biden supporters to admit that he's doing better than expected. He's not my candidate either but he's not doing awful.

(673 posts)same position he was in last April.
I think everyone who was really paying attention and knew what they were looking at expected him to be competitive back then.
A lot of the support that is fueling this "surge" is just his original support coming back to him after flirting with Warren or somebody else for a while. That shouldn't have been unexpected. I kind of expect some support to flow to Biden as vote gets closer too. A lot of people who might be supporting Klobuchar or Pete, for example, but like Biden are going to decide that he has a better chance to win and are going to migrate to him. It's pretty common to see support increase as the election gets close, also not unexpected to see a race tighten up as this happens.

(673 posts)really accurate when looking at this poll.
The last Ipsos poll actually showed Sanders leading by a point. Since that poll to this one Biden has increased 5 points and Sanders has stayed at 20.
Furthermore, Ipsos has been a weaker poll for Biden since mid summer. This was the poll that gave Warren her best numbers nationally Vs Biden. Lastly, his 24% matches his high in Ipsos since August, when he had 25%.
Ipsos is a good poll, but it has a house effect that favors the more progressive candidates, and when you take that into consideration this poll looks really good for Biden.
