(snip)
Some teens look up to Bernie as a literal father-like figure who serves as a moral compass.
I call Bernie Sanders Daddy because he is always watching over me. Every time I consider doing something bad, like hard drugs, or not paying the meter, I hear a heavy Brooklyn accent echoing in my head, talking about the shrinking middle class. Its my Daddy, Bernie Sanders, telling me to rethink my actions, said Breanna Ghazali (@JollyGhazali), a 19-year-old Des Moines Area Community College student from Urbandale, Iowa.
I call Bernie Sanders Daddy because he has all the qualities of a steadfast father: loyal, loving, supportive hes like the type of dad who shows up to your soccer game, and even if you dont win, he buys you ice cream. He believes in you, he respects you especially as a young woman and he wants the best for you, said Kiara (@kgdrue), an 18-year-old DePauw University student from Greencastle, Indiana.
(snip)
Some teens call Bernie Sanders Daddy because its funny, even though his campaign is no joke.
The reason I call Bernie Sanders Daddy is because of the humor in saying that. And also because hes been able to win over people on social media, not by trying to be funny, but by talking about issues that matter to young people like college affordability, universal healthcare and minimum wage. Once you win over teenagers, all the jokes and memes will come naturally, said Ben Forte (@BEEN_JAMM1N), a 19-year-old Butler Community College student from Wichita, Kansas.
(snip)
They believe he is their actual father as he is the first being they gazed upon after hatching out of their Twitter egg.
I call Bernie Sanders Daddy because he is Daddy. He knows exactly what the millennials want and everything he says just makes me go YASSSSSSS!!!, said Lauren Pellegrino (@TrippyLoner), a 20-year-old Valencia College student from Orlando, Florida.
(snip)
They share mutual respect.
I do it to be humorous for the most part, but I do think it speaks to our generation as a whole that someone who looks like Bernie Sanders gets called Daddy. Hes not a bad looking man, its just that its his mind were attracted to. Bernie Sanders is Daddy as F because he cares about my rights. I can sit on his lap and call him Daddy, and hed still give me the respect I deserve. That makes him the epitome of Daddy, said Alex (@tophatstevie), a 20-year-old from San Pedro, California.

Never heard of this until now. But it certainly does make one wonder about the recent tweet from BS's national press secretary.
Are they actually test marketing "daddy Bernie?" If they were, it looks like they found out it was a bad idea, judging from the response on twitter, and the scrubbing of that tweet.

Bernie did come around to Hillary's idea of requiring that the wealthy pay for their kids tuition at four year public universities, so that others could go tuition free without as much burden on taxpayers, and all could go to community college for free.
https://www.thenation.com/article/bernie-sanders-just-introduced-his-free-college-tuition-plan/
Clinton's plan would make tuition at four-year public colleges and universities "debt free" and would be calculated based on family income.
Her proposal starts by making public college free for families that earn $85,000 or less annually, gradually lifting the threshold up to families that earn $125,000 a year by 2021. Community college would be free for all students, and interest rates on student loans would be decreased.

(18,277 posts)The new law, which Cuomo announced alongside U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders in January, will be called the Excelsior Scholarship and was included in the $153.1 billion state budget that lawmakers passed on Friday.
"That will make this place a better place and this scholarship program is going to transform lives," Cuomo said at the bill-signing event at LaGuardia Community College, where Clinton joined him on stage.
He credited the former secretary of state for first conceiving of the program and said he got the idea after hearing Clinton propose free state college tuition while on the campaign trail last year.
"The inspiration for the idea came from a woman who I know very, very well, who I spent eight years with in Washington," Cuomo said.
Here's HRC's 2015-2016 policy proposal. It provided the blueprint forthe NYS legislation which mirrors her precise, detailed plan:
Every student should have the option to graduate from a public college or university in their state without taking on any student debt.
By 2021, families with income up to $125,000 will pay no tuition at in-state four-year public colleges and universities. And from the beginning, every student from a family making $85,000 a year or less will be able to go to an in-state four-year public college or university without paying tuition.
All community colleges will offer free tuition.

The Excelsior Scholarship will be phased in over the next three years. Starting this fall, it will offer free tuition for qualifying SUNY or CUNY students whose families make up to $100,000 a year, with that amount increasing to $110,000 in 2018 and $125,000 in 2019.
"I cannot tell you adequately how thrilled I was when the governor, as you heard him say, took this idea and said, 'Its going to happen in New York,'" Clinton said. "I hope it's the first of many states."

(18,277 posts)in metro areas and are on track to have it totally phased in state wide by 2020-2021. In addition, Roe v Wade was recently codified into state law, and we passed a gold standard family leave act. We have strong Democratic leadership and support in NYS.
It's a shame that other states have been unable to achieve any goals and that some states with "progressive" reputations are saddled with Republican governors who veto raises to the minimum wage, refuse to consider family leave legislation, allow universities to be driven into bankruptcy by mismanagement, and send the incarcerated (disproportionately POC) to serve their time in hellish for-profit prisons hundreds of miles from home and family and community support systems.
I know it's glamorous to be on the road garnering media attention, but one would think that leaders from those states might spend a bit more time at home working to get local Democrats elected so that their actual constituents could have better quality of life.

(49,005 posts)My point is that most of the people I've met who are enthralled by the free-college promise simply aren't aware that Bernie's plan would require the states, including states controlled by Republicans, to pay a large fraction of the cost. Which is not likely to happen.
