Sen. Kamala Harris, presidential candidate, bids for union support in a speech to labor organizations in Sacramento. Carl Costas / Special to The Chronicle
SACRAMENTO Sen. Kamala Harris, D-California, rallied union leaders Monday night at a labor dinner honoring state legislators, where she received an ecstatic reception from what could be a crucial ally in her effort to win the largest presidential primary in the country.
This is a moment that is requiring us to fight for the best of who we are. And who but labor knows how to fight? Harris told the crowd in remarks that broadly echoed her standard stump speech.
Harris on Monday night rattled off a list of worker benefits that said would not have been possible without organized labor and warned of unnamed people trying to paint unions as special-interest groups.
Thats a game theyre playing. And were going to have to fight against that, she said. We might need to do some educating ... to remind people unions built the middle class of this country.
