The Wrong Time for Joe Biden?

April 2, 2019 at 10:12 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

Buzzfeed: “Everybody already knows what they think about Joe Biden putting his hands on people, because we’ve all seen this happen in public. We’ve seen Biden kiss people at public events! We’ve all had years to think about it! Does anyone need a photograph of Lucy Flores and Joe Biden to know that, at some point, somewhere, over the last 40 years, someone might have been uncomfortable because the situation wasn’t quite right?”

“But the current system still isn’t ready to handle a well-known, gray-area subject like this. As she said on TV over the weekend, Flores didn’t consider it sexual harassment, she just was uncomfortable, and we all know what she means.”

Michelle Goldberg: “So I don’t think Biden’s avuncular pawing is a #MeToo story… But if Biden was more oblivious than predatory, his history still puts him out of step with the mores of an increasingly progressive Democratic Party. On Sunday, The New York Times reported that some Democrats are bracing ‘for an extended reckoning about Mr. Biden and gender if he enters the race.’ The inevitably of such a reckoning should make Biden reconsider getting in.”

Playbook: “His team has not made Biden available for a single interview, allowing others to tell his story. This isn’t 2009. On-the-record statements don’t suffice. A lot of folks are wondering why Biden won’t address this head-on.”

I don't think he should run now. This isn't the disqualifier, for me, although the optics are terrible. I do think that for a party currently fired up by women, minorities and younger voters facing a future far less rosy than their parents', Joe Biden is not a good fit.

He needs to address it head on, himself, on TV or twitter. He doesn't need to say much, but people want to hear from the candidate directly. I think that distance from the press and the public will hurt him more than anything else.

He is trying to remain above the fray, but there is nothing up there anymore.

Why not let the polls continually rebuff accusations that any of this stuff is hitting him in popularity? He's doing just fine.
If he does decide to commit to the race, even for one term, my hat is off to him.
He personally doesn't need this.
And I believe he is experienced enough to not be pushed around anymore.
This is one of the things I like about older candidates. (So long as they aren't senile like 45)

Nothing to do with the allegations. His time just came and went, IMO.

It's amazing to see the number of people who want him to run. They seem to have completely forgotten what an awful presidential candidate he was in both his previous attempts. I don't get it.

because he has a base of supporters who will get excited about his campaign and hopefully stay involved. However, I think there are several candidates with more forward-thinking policies and an ability to campaign effectively in the social media era.

I hope Democrats don't miss the clear message from 2016 - we want change! Long political resumes alone are not enough, it seems. So I hope that all the great first-time candidates get a long look, including Inslee!

This time around people are interested because he is an experienced old school politician. A lot of his supporters seem to want him to return us to "normal," that is, the world before Trump.

But I think he will not win the primary because there is no going back, the old world is gone forever. I think that will soon be apparent. Then we can pick the best candidate for the new world.

I support him if he’s in and will support another if he’s not. But I hope he’s holding off so he can impress the hell out of us with good, stable, forward thinking Democratic policy and a dedication to use his cred to help the younger generation move forward. I think if he has solid progressive policy and his established trustworthy relationships here and around the globe he can be the anti-Trump and whip him. The GOP crowd who wants to smear him will have to betray him to his face.

C’mon, Joe. It’s time.
