Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumSpeaking time vs Words spoken. Sanders most deliberate speaker.
The breakdown from last night's debate in New Hampshire:
Sanders: 19 min, 54 sec
Biden : 19 min, 31 sec
Buttigieg: 18 min, 16 sec
Klobuchar: 16min, 21 sec
Warren: 15 min, 55 sec
Joe Biden 3,990 --> 3.40 words/second
Pete Buttigieg 3,276 --> 2.99 words/second
Bernie Sanders 3,102 --> 2.60 words/second
Amy Klobuchar 3,058 --> 3.11 words/second
Elizabeth Warren 2,664 --> 2.78 words/second
So Sanders was by far the most deliberate (slowest) speaker, followed by Warren.
Biden was the most loquacious (fastest), followed by Klobuchar.
Huh. I thought going in that Sanders had the most deliberate speaking style with more dramatic pauses, but I did not expect Warren to be the most similar.
Also, Biden was the most rapid fire speaker as I expected, but Klobuchar surprised me by being next fastest.
So there was no gender based difference in speaking style at least as far as words per second went.
It was interesting to see that while Sanders had the most speaking time, almost 20 minutes, he only said 44 more words than Klobuchar!

(5,376 posts)Another reflection on this... perhaps Joe needs to slow down his delivery a little?
Sometimes it seems he is rushing too much while speaking. I dunno.

(29,274 posts)Liz was on fire last night though, wasnt she? She had me almost out of my chair a couple times. Doing a great job refining her message and delivery, getting stronger. And I appreciated her warmth toward Sanders.

Serious, focussed and not playing into any "horse race" narrative questioning.

Thanks, bluewater!
