You might want to look at this profile of him before deciding whether he has credibility on this issue as someone who will seriously fight for this issue (because it will take a massive struggle to make it happen):

Although i think the author is overly-critical, his point is that Buttgieg has done nothing for the poor blacks that constitute about a quarter of his city and that, based on his book, he has barely noticed them.

The 50-year-old South Bend Charles Black Community Center was refurbished and doubled in size.

His evidence-based government discovered that people receiving the worst service from the city - think trash pick up and potholes - rarely called in complaints. Service was improved.

SB installed equipment to detect shots fired. He thought that probably 20% were not reported to the police. It turned out that 80% were not called in. The police are now dispatched anytime a shot is detected to interview neighbors.

He is with Senator Booker on criminal justice reform also on the 10-20-30 rule - 10% of federal money should be spent in communities in which more than 20% of the population has lived below the poverty level for 30 years.

He wants to double teacher salaries starting with disadvantaged schools because the evidence shows that excellent teachers have a huge impact on the lives of children who attend.

I need to learn more about his plans, but he is off to a good start. I hope he’ll present more info on programs in South Bend.

The Current Affairs article is a hit job. Would he have come off better if he had a chapter in which he bragged about everything he has done “for them”? He does talk about working with the minority communities.

In his re-election he won every district - including the majority minority districts.

A total hit piece. "Pete is all about Pete" ? Seriously? The vehemence with which this article was written was off putting, to say the least, and made me dismiss it almost immediately. Sounds like the author sees Buttigieg as a threat, I wonder against who/what?

other than the way Pete did in those clips, is going to get trounced in the general election. Call for cash payments and an unwieldy scheme for distributing them, and Trump will eat us alive. Dismiss the question with a flat no, or even a wordy no, and our base is gone.

President Obama managed very well to walk the fine line between the two extremes.

on the prison industrial complex, along with "The New Jim Crow" (which I have read and which is impeccably resarched) The author is a Ph. D. student in sociology at Harvard.

I suppose this is a little ironic, since much of his criticism in the article is his association with Harvard and other elite institutions, which he says blinds its participants to the experiences of the non-elite world.
