(13,058 posts)more weight to rural predominately white areas so even though Bernie got more votes Pete got more delegates. So yes Pete won the most delegates and congratulations to him.

(67,782 posts)Largely because of Mr. Sanderss objections, the party decided to release additional numbers in 2020 that it had always logged but never made public: the number of supporters each candidate had in the first round of voting and the number he or she had in the second round, after nonviable candidates were eliminated and caucusgoers realigned.
Damned if you don't, damned if you do.

(6,116 posts)In 2016, the Sanders campaign suspected that there were BBC a lot of "errors" in the Iowa cactus results. The successfully argued to the DNC that there was no paper trail and lax accountability in Iowa's reported results. This has been a persistent issue going back decades -- for example by Edwards and others.
The Iowa results have always relied on the honesty, trust, and competency of those conducting the caucuses. But squirrelly results and cell phone videos finally pushed the DNC to impose a semblance of order on the process. For the first time, the results of the first votes were counted and reported, with a paper trail. Not surprisingly, in spite of better procedures, a paper trail, and increased vigilance, many examples of the flawed results have been documented. Certainly not as many as likely happened in the past, but still a lot.
Not damned if you do, damned if you don't. It is damned if you don't get it right. No excuse for incompetence. And now you seem to be blaming those who reported this incompetence in previous cycles!

(25,473 posts)Sanders fully understands how the process works. Pretending he doesn't just makes him look disingenuous.

(13,058 posts)votes but fewer delegates. So he felt it might be in his interest to also have the raw vote totals published. Nothing wrong with that.

(25,473 posts)Declaring victory based on the first-round results, which are irrelevant in the end, is the problem. It's quite simply a lie, because he knows how the process works.

(25,473 posts)Particularly the first round.
Intentional ignorance is not a compelling argument. "I have no idea how this works, but I know I won" is hilariously disingenuous.

(67,782 posts)....(he boasted that he had 25,000 volunteers) netted him only 45,000 votes. That's about 1.8 voters per volunteer over 3-4 months.
Bet he's sorry he insisted the release the popular vote. Awkward.

(38,687 posts)I used ABC's estimate of 10,00 volunteers. Deliberately low balled it. Either way it was very poor return on time, effort, and manpower.
My theory is that Sander's people's undisguised zealotry creeped the fuck out of the people of Iowa. The thing I saw on ABC, an old tape, one lady was weeping over the thought of helping Sanders. I was I'm sure I wasn't alone.

(481 posts)Has a right to declare victory because popular vote accounts just like a primary would.

(67,782 posts)Simple example:
Three districts, each with a delegate assigned to them.
One has 200 voters show up, 130 voting for Sanders, 70 for Buttigieg. Sanders gets the delegate.
Another has 150 voters show up, 70 voting for Sanders, 80 for Buttigieg. Buttigieg gets the delegate.
The third has 100 voters show up, 30 voting for Sanders, 70 for Buttigieg. Buttigieg gets the delegate.
Popular vote? Sanders 230 votes, Buttigieg 220 votes. But Buttigieg gets 2 delegates, Sanders 1.
Both candidates went in knowing the rules. One didn't like the result and complains.

(67,782 posts)....about $50 million in Iowa, I'd guess it's closer to $30 million. That calculates to more than $650 per vote.
