"While a recanvass is just the first step in the process and we don't expect it to change the current calculations, it is a necessary part of making sure Iowans can trust the final results of the caucus," Sanders senior adviser Jeff Weaver said in a statement.
This story is breaking and will be updated.

(2,461 posts)I guess we'll see if anyone else takes up your suggestion.
My understanding is this is just 25 or so precincts that looked particularity odd. I imagine the people who had worked hard there would be very disappointed without a re-canvass.

(3,855 posts)Sanders was tied with Buttigieg, got more of the popular vote, and among the problems were Sanders votes going to other candidates. And sanders waited until 100% of the precincts had been counted.
The perception that people votes didn't' really count is already potentially suppressing the vote over all. Sanders is helping counter that belief.

(68,667 posts)and it is reminiscent of 2000. I would move on or ask for a recount of the entire state...one of the mistakes made in 2000 was selective recounts and given what I saw in Iowa...a re-canvass is meaningless as those in charge didn't follow the rules and dropped the ball repeatedly. You can't fix this or improve the results...too flawed.

(31,454 posts)The request includes a recanvass of 25 precincts and three satellite locations.
According to the campaign, the errors, if corrected, would mean an additional national delegate for Sanders.
While a recanvass is just the first step in the process and we dont expect it to change the current calculations, it is a necessary part of making sure Iowans can trust the final results of the caucus, Bernie 2020 Senior Advisor Jeff Weaver said. Our volunteers and supporters worked too hard, and too many people participated for the first time to have the results depend on calculations that even the party admits are incorrect. Once the recanvass and a subsequent recount are completed in these precincts, we feel confident we will be awarded the extra national delegate our volunteers and grassroots donors earned.
A recanvass is not a recount, but a check of the vote count to ensure the results were added correctly.

(8,168 posts)DNC tries to improve the caucus system per Bernie's complaints from 2016.
New system fails, so they carefully and excruciatingly count the totals over several days.
ALL candidates complain bitterly about the amount of time it takes.
ALL candidates STILL request a recanvass even though it's 6 days after the caucus (oh, and there's a primary vote tomorrow.)
F*** this stupid caucus system, it's brutal and fraught with potential errors and endless whining by the candidates who lost.

(3,855 posts)Until Sanders got more transparency and the satellite caucuses, an outsider had no real way to judge it though. It was a vague feeling that something was wrong but no way to prove it.
Part of the reason we get low voter turn out is people feel their vote doesn't count. Sanders not calling for a recount would only amplify that feeling.
