Bernie explaining his M4A proposal now notes that it will be transitioned in. Dropping eligibility age to 55 in yr 1, 45 in yr 2, 35 in yr 3, etc . He also obliquely made a reference to being able to keep ones doctor, though he didnt elaborate on this.

out. Fantasy Revolution will not beat Trump.
Trump is getting exactly what he wants right now. Biden said dont let Trump choose our nominee. Well...

we must consider the Electoral College and function in the real world right now!!

(4,976 posts)phased in. It always started in first year of office. Sanders has talked about it re lowering age of eligibility whenever he has discussed the details.
The difference with Warrens transition is that she doesnt even introduce Medicare For All u til her 3rd year in office.
It was well documented in many articles. Here is one from December 2019
https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/476396-sanders-speed-of-medicare-for-all-push-is-a-major-difference-with-warren
Seriously strange that people are discovering this now.

Their timelines were different. They are both goals, and both will be met with major obstruction.
The pile on attacks on Warren were disproportionate. And wrong.

(4,976 posts)Its a bad idea. Not even trying until your last year means it wont happen unless Warren gets a second term. Sanders starts immediately and would be completed before end of first term. Waiting 3 years to start implementing a 4 year transition is just not a good idea to many people.

(4,976 posts)anything done it certainly makes sense not to have a decent plan to try.
A public option will do nothing to bring down cost of healthcare. Will be more expensive to implement. Will continue using taxpayer dollars to supplement ridiculous premiums to private health insurers and will cause the public option to be a high risk pool that will be unaffordable for many.
So why try something bold? Lets do nothing. Inspirational.

(3,131 posts)Sometime this year. Not saying whether it was there previously
Medicare currently has 64 million people in 2019
Us population is 329 million
To make math easier let me use 300 million as the number of people who would be added to the new medicare.
If there were 6 steps over 6 years that would be 50 million people a year moved to the new coverage. I know its not quite like that because each 10 group isnt the same size.
Hospitals (which are biased) claim medicare reimbursement rates cover 90% of costs. The reimbursements have to go up.
Doctors will also have to change their billing, etc and also will argue about rates.
The IT infrastructure has to handle significant growth doubling in the first year.
This is the lets not screw up big time in the delivery argument. If hospitals close or we screw up the IT the plan will fail.
We have to get on a universal coverage plan. I am not arguing against that.
I still think buy in as the next step is more politically palatable (keep your plan and lower cost). And it makes the first step smaller and easier to not mess up.
Reality is that the phase in will also be slower because of funding anyway.

Sanders' plan is way too aggressive and would result in some harsh economic conditions before the ever got everybody on it. It would then be rolled back because there are too many jobs in the insurance industry currently. Have to go mush slower than Sanders is promising.

(5,754 posts)to keep the economy from crashing and to make sure everything works. It may take more than 1 year between the age drops. Understand that medicare IS NOT FREE. You pay for drugs, medicare supplement plans, and they take money out of your social security check every month. The amount depends on income, not on preexisting conditions, so that's good.

(32,640 posts)If the SCOTUS of 2010 could strike down the mandate for states to participate in the ACA's Medicaid expansion, what do you think a 2022 SCOTUS is going to do when states refuse to take part in a Medicare expansion?
And if if anyone thinks that Medicare for All can simply be run at the federal level, and bypass state participation in administration, they're ignoring how Canada has to make it work, and they don't have nearly the population we do.
That hasn't been addressed at all.

The Sanders plan wouldn't extend insurance to all Americans immediately; rather, it would do it over four years (and would, as stated above, greatly change the program). The first year, the Medicare eligibility age would be lowered to 55. That would move to 45 and then to 35 over the following two years, until finally, in the fourth year, everyone would be covered."
