I've cracked my head on a shower door before, but can't imagine needing stitches from it.

(32,016 posts)In the event a nominee died before the election the DNC would select a replacement. It gets complicated if it would happen after the election but before the electoral college meets. But someone would be in the spot. Not an ideal situation. It has happened. In 1972 the DNC took Tom Eagleton off the ticket and replaced him with Sargent Shriver. Not one of their finer moments...

(22,130 posts)are your parents, grandparents, etc. I know that you know this fact already. That's okay, I do respect your opinion, and probably thought the same myself at one time, when I was younger.
Speaking for myself, we have been around for a little while, and have tried doing our best over the years (in general elections and ALL other elections too). We do have lots of experience and wisdom to offer. Please do consider all ages for elected offices. Most people are good no matter what their age is. And, I'd like to think that all of us, regardless of age, would do the best for the rest of us, no matter what. We all have value, at all ages.
Also, there are age discrimination laws on the books for older people...otherwise, they would never get rehired again heaven forbid they lose their jobs. BUT...in reality, these so called age discrimination laws don't have teeth. Quite a few of my 'older' friends (over 50+, and me too), who have lost their jobs (I didn't, thank god), have had a very difficult time finding a job (most of them actually). No excuse is ever given either when they are not hired.
So, even though there are age discrimination laws on the books, they sadly don't have a bite to them, it seems, since it is so difficult to prove age discrimination. A very sad fact. Some of my older friends, desperate to find a job, are janitors, work at McDonald's, etc. (I am not knocking these kinds of jobs, I'm just highlighting the downsizing of these older people's original jobs to more manual jobs). They do it a lot of times because they are not quite old enough to collect their social security (or they don't want to yet), or to pay for their health insurance. Some of them just plain given up in searching for a job. Really sad.
Take care!

(8,054 posts)with probably the most uniquely draining and aging job on earth. (tRump doesn't count, he's mentally a toddler and barely knows what's going on.). I don't rule out the oldsters, though, I would vote for them. My parents are Bloomberg's and Bernie's age, they are still pretty with-it.
If I'm ageist it's that I do have a problem with people under 40 with limited experience in life running for President. What is the hurry? I know the constitution says 35, but you were probably lucky to see your 50's back then, at least with any degree of health and functioning. Truly with age comes some wisdom, I agree.

(22,130 posts)Young and old!
You're absolutely right in that rump is mentally a toddler and doesn't know what's going on, and proves that he's incompetent on a daily basis. How he didn't get vetted properly by the republican party leaves one to wonder under what criteria the republicans actually operate with?
None, I am thinking, other than pure, raw power, and that's it. Nothing to do with helping others, nothing to do with fixing problems, nothing to do with fixing the human condition. Just an outsized ego. Sad and pathetic because it is apparent to all that he is clearly incompetent. The only thing rump has going for him is (besides an outsized ego) is dexterity on texting nonsense and being a bully.

(22,130 posts)president. He's constantly showing signs of mentally breaking down and just plain not fit for office. No one is doing anything about it either (that is, the republican senators or members of his cabinet, although there was talk of using the 25th amendment to try and remove rump). What will it take to remove him (rump) and how long can they continue to hide his true condition?
In a way 'age' is being talked about, since a lot of the illnesses and diseases tend to impact those of an older age. A sad but inescapable fact. But, most older folks know this already and thus, don't do physically demanding jobs...they already know this and acknowledge it, and gracefully (or not) move on. Some don't unfortunately (rump), and others are in great shape still, still physically able to do the job.
If someone feels like they can handle the job, why not. And as you say, they are lines of succession in case someone dies in office. Hopefully this won't happen to any candidate, period. There's already enough stress in this particular elected office to have such a thing happen, but it does happen and the lines of succession have worked well in ensuring the ongoing operation of this elected office.

(9,116 posts)Your experience is anecdotal. It is too limited in its scope to be generalizable and it isn't controlled for bias. I'm not basing my policy positions on nostalgia, and neither should anyone else.

(42,862 posts)It's a valid thing to consider. Along with personality and temperament... and whether or not he (or she) has a proven track record of being able to work well with others and an ability to compromise, work together and find common ground that promote mutual interests for the benefit of everyone.
I would be very suspicious of any candidate who would promise to release his (or her) complete health records and then go back on that promise. If something like that happened, it would make me wonder if there's something that's being hidden that he (or she) doesn't want me to know about.
One of the things I'll be considering when deciding who gets my vote is: Are they healthy enough to serve for EIGHT YEARS (two full terms)? I'm really not interested in voting for a place-holder president who'll be one-and-done... assuming that he or she is able to finish one.
That's important to me. And I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that way.
