Unless we all pledge to unabashedly and passionately support whichever candidate emerges to oppose this cancer on our Democracy, the Revolutionary War will have been fought for nothing.

(10,130 posts)I appreciate Rob's sentiments.
However, when the AG is in the President's pocket to undermine the rule of law, what makes us think that these crooks will conduct or allow a fair election or will go along with it's result? Because they have to know if they do, they're going to jail.
I think that is what we are dealing with here and what we're going to have to address - whether we like it or not. They're pretending it is a democracy but it really isn't anymore. The rule of law does not exist any longer when it comes to these authoritarians.
That is what we have to confront.
That Revolutionary war is long over.
The way this is going, we may well have a new one to fight.

(18,770 posts)Perhaps not probable (I like to think there's still many good people in government that would prevent something like the election being cancelled, or the results from being manipulated), but the odds of such a thing happening here in the US just went WAY up in the last 2 weeks alone.

(10,130 posts)And realize, the balance of the GOP are behind them.
The whole thing is corrupt as we saw with the impeachment vote.
The GOP have to have seen this coming. The changing demographics are irreversible in their lifetimes. It's the only way they're going to keep power.
So is this where it is going? .. Trump, Barr & McConnell collectively "Aw shucks, we didn't mean anything by seizing power. We'll just hand it all back and go to jail like the good little boys we really are."
Do you really think Trump will opt to go to jail by accepting an election defeat? The statute of limitations on some of the Russia thing may have run out but a bunch that has happened on his watch will not have.
If a Democrat took over the White House, Trump's tax returns, banking, what he obstructed from the DoJ on Russia and Lord knows what else will come out.
I think it is naive to think these rats are going to go quietly without a fight because the consequences for them are getting blatantly obvious. These are going to be increasingly desperate men with everything to lose if they hand over the reigns of power. They're already in a position where they do not have much choice but to play out the string and try to seize/maintain control while pacifying us into thinking a meaningful election is going to take place.
Under what scenario do you see them allowing a normal transition to a Democrat who got elected President ? That scenario seems to be getting increasingly remote when you consider what will happen to them if they do not retain power. They have nothing to lose by not going along with a transition because they're older men looking at long prison sentences.

(18,770 posts)...in Nov. So, yes, their motive is completely established. They will put the throttle to the firewall and do anything they can to disrupt the election. But, there's more of US - those who respect the rule of law and our institutions (when neither are broken) than them. So, I hold out hope that they won't succeed.
This faith I harbor isn't an abdication of responsibility. It's a beacon that keeps me motivated and fighting.

(2,706 posts)Trump isnt counting votes in the Oval Office.
Win the states we won last time. Win PA and MI, (with democratic governors) and win AZ, which can turn blue after 2018, and we win.

(10,130 posts)They only have to mess with the battleground states.
Either plant someone to cheat for the Dems and get caught
Or just claim a Deep State conspiracy that the election has been stolen.
Trump lawyer to Trump "either you survive the election or you're going to jail for the rest of your life"
I think Michael Cohen is right. Trump won't leave the Oval office casually.

(816 posts)What's happening now is the culmination of what 40 years of demagoguery, hate-spewing and the dumbing down of America has done. All is going according to plan. This is not going to end well. These traitors are not going to go away without a fight. The tipping point is coming and it may well be the next election. There will be blood.

(253 posts)The revolutionary war was so all upper class white men with property could have say in how their taxes were spent.
It was all for nothing for the majority of the people and it was only one third of the population who actively supported it.
You go on about monarchy but that way of ruling a country has been completely neutered. The Queen is only supposed to be the head of state now, not government. She isnt allowed to have political opinions or put her thumb on the scale unless asked by the Prime Minister to do it and that has to be for an extremely special reason.
Its the elected Prime Minister and all the rest of the elected MPs that run the government. They make up the cabinet and the loyal opposition. All are elected, none appointed.
This is the House of Commons. Whereas the senate everywhere should be abolished because it is deeply undemocratic and only rubber stamps bills. Its a relic of the past for monied privileged white men with property so that the rabble dont get out of control with their democratic aspirations.
