Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumPresident and VP don't necessarily have to be from different states.
Snopes has an excellent article about this, describing what the real rules are, and why people believe this is true:
https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/president-vp-different-states/
The rule is that electors can't cast votes for two candidates from their own (the elector's) state. The Snopes article concludes with this...
I don't really think that Bloomberg would choose Hillary for a running mate, but there is nothing in the rules (either Article II or the twelfth Amendment) that would prevent him from doing so.

(86,798 posts)Honestly. Some hack coughs up a hairball conspiracy and now it's a thing. Has anyone asked HRC?
I can't imagine she would want anything to do with his campaign or election.

(11,993 posts)she just said that nobody would ask her.
I could see her saying yes. She'd love a chance to be part of the ticket that beats Trump. She'd still be making more history by being the country's first female VP. And with Bloomberg approaching 80, she'd even have a not-insignificant chance of becoming President. It's not like she's likely to be offered a more significant new hill to conquer. And it's not even like she and Bloomberg are poorly matched in their positions. I don't see any downside for her, except the possibility that it could make it harder for us to win... but I don't think she'd believe that.

(4,558 posts)I'd have to make a special large batch of popcorn and have that DVR set to record for that January 2021 Inauguration watching what would be one of the most beautiful scowls on Tramps face as he and Pence hand over the office to Bloomberg Hillary... and you just KNOW she'd have the most beautiful smirk on her own face that's ever been caught on camera...
Oh hell yeah, that would be a beautiful thing to behold and fantasize about!
I'm imagining it looking something like this with a red-faced angry trump right across from her..

(11,993 posts)Nothing will motivate the Trump base more than the opportunity to vote against Hillary.
And remember, there was a poll done a year or two after Trump was in office, which showed that, even if the race were run again, Trump still would win. Politically speaking, she'd be one of the weakest candidates we could put up against Trump.

(11,993 posts)He wanted to be VP, and in a close race, even losing a "small" state could have screwed that up for him.

(115,868 posts)While there is no specific law saying that the president and VP can't be from the same state, the Constitution prevents electors in the Electoral College from voting for a president and vice president who are both from their home state. In a close election that could matter, so no candidate is going to take the risk.
The Constitution says "The electors shall meet in their respective states, and vote by ballot for two persons, of whom one at least shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves." The 12th Amendment created a separate ballot for vice president but didn't change the rule of not being able to use both votes on a person from an elector's home state remained in effect. So if the Bloomberg/Clinton ticket won, New York's electors could vote to make Bloomberg president, but not to make Clinton vice president (or vice versa). New York has 29 electoral votes. If those 29 electors couldn't vote for Clinton as VP, the Electoral College would vote to elect the new president but not elect the vice president. If so, the election of the next vice president goes to the Senate, where each senator would get one vote. If that vote is tied, maybe the sitting VP breaks the tie. Or maybe the Electoral College would vote to elect a new vice president and not a president. In this case, the majority of the House would decide.
In any event, the possibilities are too risky. Nobody is going to want to take that risk, especially in this election.
