Bernies New Bro Donald Trump
February 17, 2020
Its a shameful turn of events to see Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump deploy the very same attacks and tactics against Mike, but the reason is clear. At this point, the primary is Bernies to lose, and ours to win. Bernie knows this. Trump knows this. Thats why they are united in the campaign against Mike, said Mike Bloomberg 2020 Campaign Manager Kevin Sheekey.
Mike is in this race to defeat Donald Trump, and hes the Democratic candidate who can get that done. This campaign will not sit idly by and allow these false attacks to stand without response, Sheekey said.
The latest example comes today, with the Sanders campaign circulating a video of Mikes comments also shared by Donald Trump Jr. that is taken completely out of context; the video cuts off Mikes first sentence where he is referring to agrarian society that lasted 3,000 years, not farmers today. In just the past three months, Mike has traveled to 26 states. During that time, he has met with farmers and heard directly about the struggles they face. The Bernie Sanders campaign is choosing to push out falsehoods and sow divisions within the Democratic party.
In just the past week, Bernie Sanders National Press Secretary Briahna Joy Gray, Senior Advisor David Sirota, and National Campaign Co-Chair Nina Turner have referred to Mike as a racist and an oligarch, implied Donald Trump is better than a fellow Democatic candidate for president, and called Bloomberg supporters enablers.
Some examples of these attacks are here:
If you wouldnt even condone a tweet criticizing a racist authoritarian like Bloomberg, you are a fence sitting enabler of the worst variety and have no business holding yourself holding yourself out as a Democrat much less a progressive. [Twitter, @briebriejoy, 2/16/20]
Oligarch of the Month: Michael Bloomberg. [Twitter, @ninaturner, 2/3/20]
Moreover, we have no reason to believe Bloombergs newfound political commitments. He has demonstrated a willingness to change his stripes with the political winds, and because (sic) hes self funded, is literally accountable to no one. The danger he presents can not be overstated. [Twitter, @briebriejoy, 2/13/20]
Trump will say he has a better record on criminal justice than Bloomberg. And he may be right. [Twitter, @briebriejoy, 2/16/20]
Im told Mike Bloomberg isnt an oligarch hes just a billionaire who buys elections and is a part-time resident of a foreign tax haven.[Twitter, @davidsirota, 2/5/20]
I may not have a PhD (yet!) but I DO have the good sense of knowing what makes for Oligarchy. Anyone caping for a BILLIONAIRE (with a media company) able to buy endless ads & influence party rules halfway through is PRECISELY a perpetuator of the corrupt system ie an Oligarch! [Twitter, @ninaturner, 2/3/20]
These attacks are unacceptable. All Democrats should focus on the critical task of choosing a candidate that can compete against Donald Trump and win. In the face of the most consequential election of our lifetimes, it is unfortunate that we are even talking about such slanderous attacks from other Democrats.
Mike Bloomberg and his campaign are hyperfocused on beating Donald Trump in November, and will continue to engage voters and supports across the country to do just that.
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden

(20,709 posts)Funny thing is, the tweets he highlights were spot on. I mean, does anyone on earth not think Bloomberg is an oligarch? He's the dictionary definition of oligarch.

(20,709 posts)The offensive tweets in his ad were from random people on twitter, some of whom weren't even Bernie supporters.
The tweets he cites in this press release are spot on, because everyone in the world knows that Bloomberg is the dictionary definition of an oligarch.

(20,709 posts)The tweets from that press release, like I said, are spot on. Those have nothing to do with the tweets from random people on twitter.
Different tweets.
And the irony in all this, speaking of attacks, is that Bloomberg is trying to compare Bernie to Trump! I mean, after that, the moral high ground is gone forever. Sorry, Bloomberg!

(20,709 posts)The tweets from Turner and Sirota have nothing to do with that other stuff. Have you read them? They are spot on. They are describing Bloomberg as an oligarch (he is) who changed his political positions on a dime when he decided do run for president (he did).
What is wrong with that?

(67,782 posts)And all three of them - Turner, Gray, and Sirota - have openly bragged about voting for Jill Stein. Turner actually considered being Stein's running mate!

(20,709 posts)Bloomberg is an oligarch, obviously. And he did change his political views right before he decided to run for president. That's not rude, that's legitimate criticism of a politician.

Also, that video shows Bernie at the end disavowing attacks. I dont think the Sanders people could come up with something better for Bernie.

(8,054 posts)that I believe some in Bernie's camp are spreading, and Republicans are also running with it in order to make Dems reject Bloomberg. Don't carefully edit video clips, Bernie crowd. That's a GOP tactic. I would support either guy when it comes down to it, as should we all.

(13,058 posts)would rather sit out the election than vote for him. No Democratic nominee can win without support from the left and Bloomberg cannot deliver that support. And it's not just about Bloomberg's money. Trump has already shown that he can win in spite of being massively outspent. And this time Trump will also be well financed.

(3,635 posts)which I think alot of Dem voters are impressed by, hence Bloomberg's rise in the polls.
The other candidates seem to want to 'make nice' with Bernie (and Trump to a lesser extent), which I've thought was a mistake from the beginning, causing them to be seen as weak and not the one who can carry the torch to victory.
Bloomberg also recognizes that the Dem base is not as fiscally leftwing or anti-capitalist as media echo chambers would have us believe.
