So what am I supposed to do if Bernie is the nominee?

He doesn’t want my 1%er high dollar contribution, and I can’t make a compelling argument in support of MFA or College loan forgiveness.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

43. The 1% are very financially secure
Sat Feb 22, 2020, 10:02 PM
Feb 2020
According to a report from Bloomberg, the minimum requirement to gain entry into the top 1% club is an annual income of $515,371 as of 2017. That's a far cry from the annual income reported by the average taxpayer of $41,740. The outlet also reported that the wealth gap in the United States continues to rise, with about 1.5 million people falling into the top 1%. Those who want to become part of the top 0.1% would need to make at least $2.4 million.

The minimum net worth of the top 1% was roughly $10.4 million, according to Forbes.

It must be very comforting to be so financially secure, and I mean that sincerely.

It is younger people that are not as secure that will suffer. I will be ok as long as I don't bring myself in conflict with Trump or a powerful MAGAT.

I will support Bernie if he is the nominee, but if what I expect happens, I want be contributing anything to "resistance" causes, that would be making the same people who would not listen to people have been there before and went ahead and drove Bernie to the nomination. I think they need to realize what losing rights or their personal sense of safety with no recourse feels like, maybe they will smarten up.

Though, what surprised me about this person, especially given her current financial state, is that she's turned off by Bernie's (and to a lesser extent Warren's) attacks on the wealthy and the way he (and her) are pushing "socialism". According to her, the American Dream is becoming wealthy and they are attacking that. Not sure where she's getting that idea; she's not a stupid person but it makes me wonder how many other people are thinking like that.

“Socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires.” - John Steinbeck (maybe, there is some dispute about who said it.)

...I have problems with Mr Sanders myself, but his heart is in the right place, and in practice, he wouldn't be that different from the other Dems in terms of what he could get thru Congress. He would appoint some sane Federal judges. He would repair our relations with our allies. It would seem like Utopia compared to the last four years. Be content with that.

Sat Feb 22, 2020, 09:49 PM

Parties do not exist to represent precisely what you desire. They are, by definition, people coming to together to implement policies on which they agree. This will mean there is some variation on what each person would like, and what will be achievable in practice.

Having said that, if you can't work up enthusiasm about getting rid of Trump, then there's no hope.

...many in this country, through no fault of their own, are not as fortunate...many were given a bad hand to play from birth and have been struggling and suffering ever since...

...by supporting Bernie you're putting back into the kitty of our country, the country which helped make you fortunate...you would be helping to raise all boats which can only make for a better America, for yourself and your loved ones...

Vote for the Democratic nominee, in this example Sen. Sanders. Vote for Trump. Vote third party. Write in your preferred candidate in protest. Or, abstain from the general election vote.

I hope you choose to vote for the Democratic nominee. I won’t take the approach of saying “you will vote for Sen. Sanders!” But I believe based off your posting history you will rally to whomever the nominee is.

Every other developed country in the world does it. It would save America billions of dollars and tens of thousands of lives every year.

Carrying health insurance is an undue and ridiculous burden to put onto business employers, no other country in the world does it, it gives bosses unfair leverage over employees, and forces employers to negotiate with insurance agencies on matters that have nothing to do with their businesses.

"I can't make a compelling argument in support of Medicare for all"? Why not? The USA is pretty much alone among major developed countries in not having some form of universal healthcare; the USA is definitely alone in being a country where catastrophic medical expenses are the leading cause of personal bankruptcy. You want a compelling argument for Medicare for all? Tell people to go look at how many things on GoFundMe are for cancer treatment, or raising money for an organ transplant, or being able to afford to pay for an insulin prescription. And maybe tell people to look at this map (red:: countries without universal healthcare):

Sun Feb 23, 2020, 08:52 AM

I used that tact during the 2016 campaign. I pressed the point of how bad Trump would be for America in debates with Bernie or Busters. I wasn't going to convince hardly any of them to be "Pro-Clinton", but I got some of them to become "Anti-Trump" enough to vote for Clinton anyway. This time it should be easier, the evidence of the damage Trump has done is all around us and getting worse. If Never Trumper Conservatives can make the "Vote Blue No Matter Who" case, anyone can if they try, and it can swing votes.

Or then again try another issue to argue on, may I suggest Climate Change? It is clearly dire with the world at a tipping point and Trump plans to make the crisis graver.

The owner makes big promises. Like he will send a military team riding in a terrain vehicle out 400 miles to pick them up. To top it off, the place is actually powered by windmills that sit on the plain near it, no shit . The military team is about 10 people as of now and the facility holds something like 300-400 families. It all is just fucking illogical. And put an actual environmentalist in charge of the EPA. Oh and at least try to appoint judges that are decent, not the scum of the earth that Trump tries to appoint whenever he can.*

I could keep going but you get the point. If nothing else, the worst of Trump's damage train is halted with Bernie, or any of our candidates. Reversing the damage is a different question but just stopping the disaster from continuing to spread, is worth your effort to convince others.

Vote Democrat. If you can't argue for student loan forgiveness maybe you should do some reading as to how the student loan crisis happened. For profit colleges receiving public monies for worthless diplomas, the private lenders making student loans and the reworking of bankruptcy laws with no escape from said student loans. No I don't have any, don't have any skin in that game but I do realize how it was rigged to make some people alot of money at the expense of working class.

Regardless of any implicit allegations we make in regards to our income or a self-validating fondness for name-dropping, I'd simply vote for the Democratic nominee.

Because sometimes we have to realize that "It's all about ME!" is a child's game... and it may finally be time to put that self-absorbed self-advertising away in favor of something a wee bit more substantial-- like Chute & Ladders.

Sanders has plenty of money from low dollar donations so I think he will understand if you don't.

Nor do you have to make a compelling argument for MFA or student loan forgiveness. Other much smarter people have already done so.

Personally I think people not having to ration insulin and the trillion dollars that will come pouring back into the economy are pretty compelling arguments. But I am just a peon who lives paycheck to paycheck so what do I know?

If you have to ask, you've believed the hype.

Good on you if you make that donation on behalf of someone who can't, because it's done in the spirit of resisting class war on the 99%.

A lot of us couldn't make compelling arguments in support of two of Hillary's or Obama's campaign issues, either.

So, if you have to ask ... I'm shocked, frankly.

Or like we are always urged to do. I mean I can’t believe you actually want Trump to win again. There are no good arguments against Medicare for All (or another form of single payer health care). None whatsoever. The only arguments against it come from a place of selfishness, as in “why should I pay for someone else’s health care” (which is not actually how it works). Same with college loan forgiveness. Utter selfishness not to want young people to be unburdened by debt as they are starting out.

So, we all suck it up. I’ve had to before. There has never been candidate I could fully get behind, other than Obama. Not Clinton (either of them), not Gore or Kerry (yawn).

While I despise Buttigieg and Bloomberg, I can manage to hold my nose long enough to vote without enthusiasm.
