(5,256 posts)Based on the results of one primary (and two caucuses). So, yeah, based on one primary, we're going to draw conclusions just as supporters of Sen. Sanders have done with the same data set.

So how does the Bernie campaign explain that? Is SC just an outlier??

(358 posts)Let's not forget that this primary is about choosing the nominee. If Biden crushes it is SC, he could carry that momentum to the nomination.
Blowing off the whole significance of the SC primary and the South is a mistake. They will play a pivotal role in the nomination.

(8,684 posts)Getting blasted in a big diverse state like South Carolina will be a huge setback. I suspect the media will jump all over that. It will be interesting to see how the Sanders campaign explains that away.. and I don't think it would be wise to say "too many black folk".

(13,058 posts)which is 60% AA. And with Bernie leading in so many other states I think that South Carolina might not be enough to get Joe back on track even if this latest S.C. poll is accurate.
According to RCP, Sanders is up +12 in Colorado and Wisconsin, +17 in California, +9 in Virginia, +6 in Washington State and +6 in Maryland.
Not all of those states will vote on Super Tuesday, but numbers like this should be encouraging for Sanders supporters.

(13,058 posts)Here is what I am saying. Joe Biden does best among AA voters. Good for him. AA's make up a very important constituency in the Democratic Party. But South Carolina has the highest percentage of AA voters compared to other states. So Biden's popularity among AA voters, while it's a good thing, won't influence the results as much in other parts of the country. Nevada already proved that. Joe won the AA vote but lost the Nevada caucus by double digits. And I think that strong AA support won't be enough for Joe to win a lot of other states. For instance, in California Joe's support from AA voters is outweighed by strong Hispanic support for Bernie, and they are also an important constituency in the party.

If Bernie doesnt do well in states with high AA percent then he shouldn't be our nominee since black folks represent a huge and important segment of our party.
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden

(13,058 posts)And I think that in Nevada Bernie actually won the younger AA demographic. He only lost the older demographic.

(8,684 posts)As you were implying.
Bernie is likely to lose all the deep south states big.. SC, GA, AL, MS, LA, FL.. all with high AA voter populations.
Not good for someone who wants to be our nominee.

(13,058 posts)But I do think that the growing Hispanic voter population in the South might keep it closer for Bernie.

(8,684 posts)I will give him that. But he is not attracting a significant number of black voters and that could and should be his downfall.

(713 posts)Uncle Joe seems to have some life left in him. I have predicted for a while that he will win South Carolina, and then it will be a fight between Biden and Sanders on Super Tuesday. I think in Super Tuesday we might see one or the other gain a lead, or they might split states and delegates and run neck and neck with each other. Whatever happens, I think that we are going to have a very interesting week in politics coming up.

(13,058 posts)After all, it's just one state that Joe was always expected to win. Yes, if Joe wins it by a big margin it will be a boost to his campaign, and congratulations to him. But it's just one state and with Super Tuesday coming up just three days later the results from South Carolina may well turn out to be just an asterisk.

I think that Biden might need to worry more about Bloomberg than Sanders. Bloomberg's ads in South Carolina and the Super Tuesday States might be drawing voters away from Biden. Biden and Bloomberg are competing for the same votes- moderate Dems, traditional members of the Party. If they split the moderate vote, this creates an opening for Bernie.
If Bloomberg falters, Biden is the likely beneficiary. So Biden should be punching back against Bloomberg like Warren did in the debates, where Bloomberg did not do so well. The Sanders people are a different thing. Sanders has his loyalists, and Bloomberg is not likely to draw many of them away from Bernie. Biden voters are different, and some might be drawn to Bloomberg. So I would advise the Biden people to go after Bloomberg. He is the main threat to Joe's candidacy right now.
[Note: A Correction- Bloomberg is not on the ballot in South Carolina. I thought he was when I wrote this comment. I am now correcting it. I now think that Biden will do very well in South Carolina, and then will go into Super Tuesday with a big surge. Bloomberg may have made a big mistake not running in South Carolina. I now think that Super Tuesday will be mainly a fight between Biden and Sanders. We will see what develops.]
