To be severely concerned about the fact that a candidate for President had a heart attack severe enough to require stent placement less than six months ago. Having a letter from a doctor saying "he's good to go" isn't sufficient. What is his left ventricular ejection fraction after this? I'm sure he's had an echocardiogram and knows the results. Why would he play coy with this? This isn't about tearing down Bernie, it's about the people having the right to know if they're nominating someone who has a significant risk for being incapacitated by a major medical event.

And you know very well that a letter doesn't equate to a medical record. Also, I know full well what goes into writing such letters because I write them as a physician. You can say he's released a summary, or a letter of support from his doctor but it's not his medical record. It's just not. It's not a smear just because you don't care for what's being said...this is a very real issue.

This is essentially like applying for a loan, and, as proof of creditworthiness, supplying a letter from some rando at one's bank saying, "Yeah, he's totally good for a loan." It conveys no useful information beyond some person's opinion, and certainly doesn't convey the sort of information one might expect from a credit report.

It's also worth noting, I think, that Trump did the same thing. He showed up with a letter from some rando that more or less said, "This orange guy is super healthy, and in fact, would be the healthiest person ever elected to the Presidency."

Given that Sanders could vapor-lock well before his first term is over, his choice for VP takes on enormous significance. But quite apart from that, the voting public should be informed as to the state of Bernie's health. His refusal to do so does him no favors, and only invites speculation as to what those records might show.

Washington(CNN)The health of the presidential candidates gained attention this week when Sen. Bernie Sanders said his campaign likely will not release his full medical records despite previously committing to do so.

What Sanders said he'd do

Sanders committed to disclosing his full medical records in September. The next month he had a heart attack. In December, Sanders' campaign released three letters from physicians attesting to his heart health, in an attempt to address concerns about his fitness to serve.

In an October interview with Gupta after his heart attack, Sanders indicated again that he would release his medical records, saying: "The people do have a right to know about the health of a senator, somebody who's running for president of the United States -- full disclosure."

If he doesn't release them, then he is in essence confirming the worst-case concerns about his health. There is simply no upside to withholding them.

The only thing it gains is that his supporters can once again cry persecution. I've seen it online many times already.

Trump and Bloomberg should absolutely release their returns, as others here have noted. But whether they do or don't, Sanders should release his health records. Otherwise he's hiding something (even if he isn't).

Newsflash

If you are 78, by definition, you are in failing health. Everyone by the time they hit 33-35 is degrading physically.

No one is surprised that the septuagenarian landscape of this race is not guaranteed minute to minute.

There'd be damage assuredly given the recency & the proceeding procedure.

It's a gotcha talking point. If people are genuinely concerned then they'd press for a VP name to evaluate the ticket. Otherwise, it's just hot air and team cheerleading to score soft support points.

Pointing fingers and crying petulantly, "He didn't do the thing so I'm not doing the thing either!" is not a good look. Trump's refusal to release any records naturally leads to a logical conclusion: he's hiding something. Probably several somethings. If the Democratic nominee (whoever it ends up being) does the same, it leads to the same conclusion, and looks immature to boot. You can't condemn someone for doing X, and then turn around and do X oneself.

A better tactic would be to release records and proclaim far and wide, "Unlike Trump, I have nothing to hide from the American people and am committed to honesty and transparency. This is what Americans can expect from me and my future administration."
