It is not who has a plurality.
Each candidate has delegates.
If on first round no one reaches the threshold it goes to a second where everyone becomes unpledged.
Candidates then will direct their delegates as to who they wish to receive the delegates.
Those delegates will follow along mostly with that direction. A concensus will begin to emerge.
Then the person will have a majority and I can assure you that whoever that person is will be the nominee, and superdelegates will take their queue from that concensus no matter who it is.
Sanders supporters are focusing on wrong group of people. They need to be trying to woo delegates of other candidates.

(25,586 posts)then surely he can make the case and get the delegates needed, right? Easy-peasy lemon squeezy.

(20,709 posts)Hopefully the superdelegates will respect the will of the voters. But we'll see.

(25,586 posts)He will probably have to peel off other candidates delegates before they switch elsewhere. One assumes anyone capable of taking on the mantle of POTUS can handle the simple act of coalition building at a convention, yes?
You seem awfully worried that he cant close the deal.

(20,709 posts)It's weird that supporters of other candidates seem to have given up on actually trying to get more votes than Bernie. Why is that?
It's simple. If a candidate wants the nomination, go out and get people to vote for him/her!

(32,640 posts)So, calling for a brokered convention is calling for the "fracture of the party?" Like when a candidate who does so when "they have given up trying to get more votes" than the front runner?
On May 29, 2016, Sanders said superdelegates had the very grave responsibility to make sure that Trump [is not] elected president of the United States. Vote for the strongest candidate.
And even as Clinton secured the Democratic nomination the following week, Sanders continued to push for superdelegates to vote to override Clintons pledged delegate majority.
Told on June 7, 2016, that his superdelegate convention push would defy history and the will of the voters, Sanders said, Defying history is what this campaign has been about.
Bernie Sanders pushed for a contested convention in 2016. Now he wants to avoid one. Feb 27, 2020.

(67,782 posts)One thing to remember, too, is that the majority of delegates are "establishment Democrats", including many of Sanders' delegates.
As Penny aptly tells Sheldon Cooper on "Big Bang Theory", don't piss off the person who serves your food!

(32,640 posts)The "my way or the highway" strategy doesn't really win friends and influence people.
An election is a popularity contest, after all.
