Democratic Primaries

Wanting to be president is not something that White House wannabes ever really get over. Remember Richard Nixon? John McCain? Hillary Clinton?
Now comes Joe Biden again. Most likely.
Hes late starting his third bid, which should launch shortly after Easter, a good time, symbolically speaking, to attempt political resurrection. Biden is so of the 1980s and 90s, olden times that seem much longer ago than they really are.
Watch todays growing mob of progressive jump-on-the-counter, government-should-do-everything, sure-Ive-inhaled-marijuana, watch-my-dental-cleaning, yes-I-took-Mom-to-a-porn-flick crowd of ambitious, uber-liberal Democrats. And youd think Joe belongs in a bat-lined mausoleum with the likes of Tip ONeill, Hugh Scott, Mike Mansfield and Everett Dirksen.

(6,709 posts)did not go well and ended quickly. In the first charges of plagiarism knocked him out before the first primary. In the second he had an abysmal showing in Iowa (1%?) and withdrew.
He's running now (coasting actually) on name recognition and Obama nostalgia. I think when he declares, and actually starts to campaign , his numbers will sink rapidly.

(6,709 posts)unless the president dies in office, right? Right? in the iconic phrase, it's "not worth a bucket of warm spit"? (actually I think the original was "warm piss" but that's not for tender ears). Point is, being VP has eff all to do with governing. He wasn't In Charge, he offered advice--which he could do in or out of office--but made no decisions. He was a wing man. He did a good job of that, and would make an excellent surrogate/happy warrior.
I like Biden, as a person. He has overcome horrific tragedies in his life and soldiered on. He was an excellent veep, imo. He was a disaster as a presidential candidate and will be again, also imo. Above all he represents the past: a past that is full of bad decisions and bills he was on the wrong side of. The touchy-feely crap is the least of it, a minor distraction, but one that resonates. The Iraq War was one, but that's so last cycle. The Anita Hill hearings were a debacle and he ran them. The so-called Clinton crime bill was his baby and it was a catastrophe--one he has never apologized for--that ruined the lives of GENERATIONS of minority communities. The bankruptcy bill of 2005 was his baby, and a handout to banks and credit card companies, many located in Delaware. One wonders just who his constituents were on that.
At this point the power and enthusiasm in the Democratic party is in women, minorities and younger voters--all adversely affected by Joe Biden's actions and positions. It will all land on him when he declares, unless he decides not to embarrass himself and passes. And you know what? It should. The past is prologue, the past got us where we are, and the past needs to be...past.
Different time? Yep. The past.

(34,857 posts)You can dismiss the idea that his being VP really doesn't amount to much because he was often in the room when the decisions were handled and that experience is invaluable. Obama trusted his input, and sought it. While it was ultimately Obama who made the decisions, the one thing being VP brings to the table that being mayor, or senator, or a congressman doesn't is that you have first-hand experience watching, listening, discussing the magnitude of issues that dominate a president's decision making. That is not anything to pooh-pooh. Add the fact he served in the United States Senate for years and, outside Hillary Clinton, or an incumbent president, and you'd be hard pressed to find a potential candidate with that much experience.
Just because you weren't the head man doesn't mean you aren't a good coach, or capable of succeeding. After all, Roy Williams was once an assistant under Dean Smith and now he's one of the greatest college basketball coaches in the country.

(6,709 posts)Biden has matured? Two days ago he was joking about how much he doesn't get it. He never will. He's coasting on name recognition and nostalgia, not his own record. And when that gets examined (do you think it won't?) it will not be pretty.
