Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumWho gets Klobuchar's and Buttigieg's delegates?
Now that they've dropped out, are their delegates free to vote at the national convention for somebody else? Or are those delegates still legally committed to casting their votes for the candidates they're pledged to, even though those candidates are no longer running?
If those delegates are now no longer pledged, and if they vote for Biden because Klobuchar and Buttigieg endorsed him, then Biden suddenly leads in the delegate count, 86-60. If their candidates dropping out doesn't release them, then Sanders leads 60-53.
I have been watching MSNBC for several hours, but nobody has addressed this issue. MSNBC a few hours ago reported the current delegate count at Sanders 60, Biden 53, Buttigieg 26, Warren 8 and Klobuchar 7.

(11,109 posts)The withdrawing candidate can encourage - but not require - their released candidates to vote for a particular candidate. I would expect most delegates to vote as requested by the withdrawing candidate.

(11,991 posts)...(at least second ballot), the "lead" of 86-60 is a kind of non-issue, since it would only be true for maybe about 24 hours. And while Biden is getting great press today that should help him in today's votes, none of that press is calling him the delegate leader. So, it's really academic.
