A long text from my daughter on the eve of this Super Tuesday.

I'm suffering from a bit of insomnia tonight, which is not at all rare for me. I woke a short while ago, and picked up my phone to find this text message from my young daughter - an ardent Bernie supporter.

I know in my heart that her voice, and not the voice of some obnoxious internet troll, is the true voice of the young people who support Sanders. I will constantly remind myself of that in the weeks and months ahead, regardless of what this eventful primary day brings.

We all have the same goal, and we are all going to need each other in the struggle ahead.

Wanted to send you a revised version of a text I sent to mom after chatting about political candidates:

I feel so lucky to grow up with parents who are willing to listen to not just me, but young people and disenfranchised people in general. I have so many friends who are equally passionate about the world we live in, but are written off by the people around them because they are “too young” or “haven’t seen the real world yet.”

It means so much to me that I’m able to be heard - not even with the intention to convince everyone that what I believe in is what they should believe in, but to know that you care and that my voice matters and is worth listening to! I am so hopeful for the young people of today but I know it can often be easy to shrug it off as unfounded optimism (eg. The young folks protesting Vietnam and endless war).

I just hope that whatever happens in the elections, we aim for something better than what we have previously seen as achievable. It is scary times right now and in any situation, political or otherwise, I always want to push for the best ideal, and worry about settling later. We young people know that progress doesn’t happen overnight, but if we keep settling and settling and never asking for something better, we may never live to see it given the state of earth as we know it - with global warming, nuclear war, and epidemics looming over our 20-and-under-heads (something most people have never had to consider before - will I even live to see 40 years old? Is there any point in having kids with the way things are going, if they will suffer? Should I even try to plan for the future, or just live life in the now and expect that the planet as I know it won’t be here 15 years from now?).

I love you both so much and am so grateful to be your kid.

the same thing. I would hope that part of the education is understanding Democrats are not the bad guy. Every one of our Democrats want the same thing Sanders has been pushing. Our Dems have been after them a lot longer than the four years Sanders has been talking about it. That we need that youth vote she is talking about, to come out and vote so we get the house and the senate along with the Presidency. That the reason Democrats have not gotten more is because of the way we vote and who we vote in. Sanders is not the only one to her and all youths goal.

And wonderful parent that you are. I admire the parent that listen to their kids and allows the empowerment of self thought. I am a proponent of just that myself.

5. That is just blatantly false representation. Biden, all our Dems want to aggressively go after

climate change. Biden, along with all our Dems want to increase minimum wage. Want to repair and advance ACA. Wants to address the prison inequities. Free two year college. Address college debt. Address campaign finance. Gun laws. Drug costs. Citizenship for dreamers. Increase corporate and capitol tax and wealth tax.

It is statement like yours and Sanders that harm youth. Which is the exact opposite of bettering their future. It is wrong, it is dishonest.

All the young Bernie supporters I know are similarly concerned and highly motivated to bring about change. We should encourage them to speak out, then listen when they do.

The arrogant dismissal of young Bernie supporters here at DU has been disgraceful.
