Democratic Primaries

...and a shit load less I hate Bernie venting.
As I move from the Bargaining Stage through the Depression Stage and toward Acceptance, I need to decide if I'm going to support Sanders or Biden.
I say "need", but I could also just hunker down and wait for the convention to work its will, then pick up the fighting again in the fall. However, I feel connected to this community, so I would rather stay in and participate.
I'm politically closer to Sanders, but I haven't gotten on his bandwagon cause of the culture his leadership has inspired. I like many lot of things that he talks about; I think he keeps Democrats as a party a little bit more honest about and connected to our roots. He's not comfortable with the powerful when there are so many in need; and we shouldn't feel all comfy there either.
That said, my gut tells me Joe would be a better leader, despite a healthy array of shortcomings (tho fewer than Bernie has). So, the last thing I need to see is a bunch of Bernie-bro-type slash & burn invective directed against Senator Sanders from supporters of VP Biden. I don't think it's good for us as an online community and as a party to rally ourselves up this way.
I think we as a culture would be better served by uplifting our next leader, our values, and the people we think our country should help... instead of wiener punching "the other guy" and obsessing about every little flaw that annoys us about a man who means well but just doesn't have the temperament to guide a nation.
King Saul was annoyed by the prophet Nathan, but when he quit listening to him, he turned into a dick (not an actual Bible verse). This is how Saul bolloxed up the Kingdom of Israel. If we as an online community could act less like King Saul, or at least less like the Bernie Bros, I think it would make us better advocates for winning new voters to support Joe Biden and other Democratic candidates.
It would certainly help me come about and march along with the band if this was the culture and message we focused on.

(54,033 posts)Culture is not as much about what you read. It's about what we say, what we do, and how we approach the fight.
There's going to be enough hurt feelings coming out of this convention. Now's the time to act like unifiers. SANDERS IS NOT THE ENEMY. He's a rival for leadership. And the reality is, he could very well be our nominee. So practicing hating Bernie is about the dumbest thing we could do around here

(29,213 posts)Yes, there are many others... too many to list.. but Joe is waaay up there.
He makes the time to call people who have gone through a tragedy of their own.
He listens to all sorts of people who want to suggest something to simply tell him their stories.
For example Amy Klobachar just told a story about being a brand new Senator and giving her first speech in the Senate... to a completely empty chamber. And who calls her after she is finished... the Vice President!

(32,626 posts)talking about how freaky yesterday was. The best thing was to see a lot of Americans acting in unison, totally unaware of what the other was doing. It wasn't ads, it wasn't phone calls, it wasn't endorsements, it wasn't who voted for this or that....it was generic, something in the air. Like many others, we decided at the last minute, and were floored by the results as they came in. With all the slicing and dicing pundits do, it's hard to believe there is a 'we', but for a brief moment there was definitely a "We".

(16,829 posts)How Biden Helped Strip Bankruptcy Protection From Millions Just Before a Recession
BY LUKE DARBY
October 23, 2019
During the most recent Democratic presidential primary debate, Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren had an awkward and tense exchange over the creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The friction between the two of them goes back quite a ways, long before Biden was vice president and Warren became a senator in Massachusetts. The two first butted heads over Biden's support of bankruptcy reform in the late 1990s and early 2000s, back when he represented Delaware in the Senate.
The key detail is the difference between the two kinds of bankruptcy a person can declare: Chapter 7 and Chapter 13. Chapter 7 is known as liquidation bankruptcy and is meant for people with limited income. It allows them sell off what assets they can to pay creditors and then discharge most of the rest of their debts relatively quickly. In contrast, Chapter 13, reorganizing bankruptcy, puts the debtor on a payment plan, so a portion their future income is guaranteed to go to paying back their creditors. If you're a creditor, this is the option you would rather someone take when they owe you money, since you're going to get more out of them over the long run.
The 2005 Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act (BAPCPA) was meant, on paper, to prevent people from abusing Chapter 7 bankruptcy. It accomplished that through means testing, making it harder for people to declare Chapter 7 bankruptcy versus Chapter 13. If a person's income exceeds a certain threshold, they're ineligible for declaring Chapter 7. The bill also required people to complete a credit counseling course no more than 180 days before they declare bankruptcy. It also limits the kinds of debt a person can discharge through bankruptcy: If they use a credit card to spend too much money on "luxury goods" or withdraw too much in cash advances, that credit line can't be erased. And, gallingly, the bill made it completely impossible to discharge student loan debt. It may very well be the single piece of legislation most responsible for putting the U.S. in the current student debt crisis.
Biden was one of the bill's major Democratic champions, and he fought for its passage from his position on the Senate Judiciary Committee. He had pushed for two earlier bankruptcy reform bills in 2000 and 2001, both of which failed. But in 2005, BAPCPA made it through, successfully erecting all kinds of roadblocks for Americans struggling with debt, and doing so just before the financial crisis of 2008. Since BAPCPA passed, Chapter 13 filings went from representing just 24 percent of all bankruptcy filings per year to 39 percent in 2017. Melissa Jacoby, a University of North Carolina law professor specializing in bankruptcy, told Politico, "I doubt that the bill reined in the abuses that the bill was premised on, in part because they didnt necessarily exist in the first place."

(54,033 posts)Progressives are definitely going to have to play a role in pushing for sound regulation of the finance industry.
This is exactly what we need to push Biden in the establishment, not "to the left," but toward a robust defense of American families.

(251 posts)Bernie Sanders faced consistent criticism from the left on one issue in the 2016 Democratic primary: guns.
Opponents Hillary Clinton and Martin OMalley attacked Sanderss past votes against a bill in 1993 that established national background checks and for a bill in 2003 and 2005 that protects gun companies from lawsuits if their products are used in crimes. Sanders, an independent from rural and gun-friendly Vermont, defended the virtues of moderation on this issue arguing, We need a sensible debate about gun control which overcomes the cultural divide that exists in this country, and I think I can play an important role in this

(251 posts)Indeed, I respect your trepidation over youre voting choice.
I too, If I were appointed god, would put Bernie in, with a Dem congress of course, too.
But reality and what is possible or what is right, more often than not, are two different things.
And reality always tells us, you cant always get the best, or always get what you want.
And if you try to do it, outside of the proper time and place it should be a part of, then you may be doing more harm than good.
Its called, being in a place of wisdom.
