I remember the 2008 and 2016 primary seasons very, very well.

In both of those years, the Democratic Party broke with long tradition to nominate two people who were unlike other presidential nominees. A black man and a woman. History was made by the Democratic Party in both years.

Obama got to be our President for eight years. Hillary Clinton, despite winning the popular vote by 3 Million, didn't.

This year, we had some highly qualified women running for the nomination. None of them will be the nominee. They didn't earn enough votes to carry on until the convention. That's a pity, to be sure, but that's what has happened in 2020. This year, the race is down to two men, one of whom served for 8 years as Barack Obama's Vice President. The other was a candidate in 2016, as well, and is serving as an Independent Senator from Vermont.

Here's another thing I remember, though: Despite the historic nomination of Hillary Clinton in 2016, many Democrats, both men and women, opposed her nomination and did not support her enthusiastically after she won our nominataion. We had a wonderful opportunity to follow up our first black President with our first woman President. We didn't do that, though. What a shame!

So, we're back to having two old white men as our choices for the 2020 presidential nominee. Whichever one wins will be facing the worst President in history. Why is it, then, that we are bickering over our support for whomever the nominee will be? Did we not learn anything from the last round? Are we going to let petty disputes over how progressive those candidates are interfere with voting out the worst President in history? How could we even think of doing that?

Either Joe Biden or Bernie Sanders will be our nominee. I suspect it will be Joe Biden, based on recent primary results and the way things are going. I will say this one last thing:

I will be excited to elect either of those two men as the next President. The prospect of ridding our nation of Donald J. Trump makes me excited just thinking about it. I'd have been excited if the nominee had been Elizabeth Warren, too, but it will not. I would dearly like to see a Democratic woman as President in my lifetime. I still hope to, but this is 2020 and there is Donald Trump.

Let's just put aside all of the details and elect a Democrat to replace Trump, shall we? Let's not shoot ourselves in the foot once again, please. We cannot afford four more years of what we now have. We simply cannot.

We could have elected our first woman as President four years ago, but did not. More's the pity. Let's not screw it up again, so we'll have a chance to do that in another election, OK?

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

If not, though, I will still vote for the Democrat on my ballot with enthusiasm. I will campaign for Biden in the primary race, but if Bernie wins the nomination, I'll be campaigning for him in the general election.

I am enthusiastic about dumping Trump!

we would have a woman President... so many of us would have fought hard for that... this is not a year to whine, this is a year of trauma and desperation... there is a need for a fire extinguisher... not the time to redecorate the house (I know bad analogy)

we are so very sad but this is what has been handed us and we do what we must

those of us who have suffered at the hand of circumstance, fate, bad timing, bad policy, etc. get it

for those that haven't/don't, just trust that we need Biden right now...

elder men as weak, unworthy, no count, not worth listening to, less than relative to young candidates. Nothing could be further from the truth in both cases. We need to get used to seniors having power voice, and worth.

I don't mask it by calling myself a senior or an elder. I am an old man. It is merely descriptive. I am not weak, unworthy, of no account, nor not worth listening to. But I am old. I sometimes call myself a "geezer," or an "old fart." I have earned the right to call myself what I am - an old man.

I'm also old enough to do as I please, and I do exactly that.
