Donald Trump must be defeated,” Bernie Sanders insists, “and I will do everything in my power to make that happen.”
Well, he also claimed that he "worked as hard as he could" to help Hillary after the convention... but we know that's not entirely true.

But I guess it's a bit subjective. Indeed it may HAVE been "as hard as he could" ... perhaps because he wasn't capable (physically or emotionally or otherwise) of doing more. But both he and his defenders often cite his claim as if it was some sort of NEW RECORD-BREAKING STANDARD of excellence to which future campaign rivals will be judged.

However, in comparison with what Hillary did for her former rival in 2008, it's clear that Bernie's "efforts" were somewhat lackluster and perfunctory (at best... and I'm being polite and generous in using those specific adjectives.)

I recently found this side-by-side comparison that someone did. It reveals a lot when you can look at the data... and the data tells a significantly different story than the "hard as I could" claim.

All I'm trying to say is that it's important that we be entirely honest when examining someone's claims about their own performance. The American people deserve to know the truth and it's not always a good idea to accept someone's own boasting without closer examination and comparison. That's fair, isn't it?

I had forgotten this until recently, but I recall reading in 2016 that until the last month or so of the campaign, Hillary was reluctant to have Bernie be too prominent as a supporter. I think she was the one who chose not to have more joint events with him, and I read recently that he cut an ad for her in 2016 that she decided not to use. I don't know what the ad was or why she didn't use it, but my guess is she calculated the political cost to being associated too heavily with a self-declared socialist outweighed the potential benefit. In 2008, that wasn't the case because she and Obama had similar ideological stances, and the divide was more about identity politics than issues.

Apr 2020

His "rallies" were mostly about himself with a perfunctory "oh, vote-for-Hillary" as a postscript at the end. It was clear in Hillary's book "What Happened" that she was less than impressed with his performance and his lack of sincerity and lack of enthusiasm. When you think about what was at stake, you'd think he could have found the leadership skills and self-motivation needed to simply smile and "fake it" and play along to do everything necessary to get the Democrat elected.

I'd be very interested in learning more about the source that claims Hillary was reluctant to have Bernie campaigning for her. Like I said, every indicator is that she did want to see more of him, but she was disappointed in his lackadaisical performance and demeanor.

Even Jane got in on the action by giving her twitter followers "permission" to not vote for the Democrat... with a message that people needed to follow their heart and that the only thing that matters is that they vote. Good lord, Jane. Seriously? No... what matters is defeating the GOP, not simply "showing up" to cast a protest vote for Jill Stein.

I figured it was because she was reluctant to be associated too closely with a self-declared socialist, but you could be right that she didn't campaign with him more because she wasn't impressed with how he was campaigning.

Agree with you about Jane Sanders - I was pissed about that tweet. Overall, I don't disagree with those who said he could have done more and been less divisive - it's a big reason I didn't support him this time.

Sanders on Clinton's 'I'm with her' slogan: 'It's so phony'

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) called former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's "I'm with her" slogan "phony," according to a new book.

In "Shattered: Inside Hillary Clinton's Doomed Campaign," The Hill's Amie Parnes and Sidewire's Jonathan Allen write that members of the Clinton campaign reached out to Sanders aides in late September to share a script of an ad they wanted the Vermont senator to record.

In the ad, Sanders would tout Clinton for her education, healthcare and minimum wage proposals. And he would talk about how then-Republican nominee Donald Trump was wrong about climate change and the economy.

At the end of the script were the words: "I'm with her." “It’s so phony!” Sanders said. “I don’t want to say that." Sanders did not use the slogan in the ad.

snip===================================================================

The full ad was never used because it was panned was by focus groups.

“People felt that it was him delivering his message, not Hillary’s,” said one Clinton aide familiar with focus group responses.

"People didn’t feel that it was an authentic pitch for her and what she wanted to do. It even had some backlash in folks saying that he’s not really supporting her.”

The ad was not used on television, but some of the shorter takes of Sanders were used online.

Governor Cuomo has actually accomplished the things that other career politicians merely talk about.

Among Cuomo's achievements BEFORE his strong, cogent, proactive response to COVID-19:

- $15/hr minimum wage
- tuition-free community college and state university
- passage of a gold-standard family leave act
- gender pay parity legislation
- the codification of Roe v Wade into state statutory law

We Democrats in NY love Cuomo.

He has done some very good things, like the ones you mentioned. But he has also made a point of trying to limit the influence of the Working Families Party, which put pressure on him to do many of those things. He and the legislature recently changed the requirements for a party to get continued ballot access to make it harder for WFP to get on the ballot.

and which were accomplished in the course of his four term with a Democratic state assembly and a Republican state senate. Third parties don't get to grab the credit for the goals Cuomo achieved in spite of divided government.

When the public campaign financing commission rewrote state election election law in 2019, small third parties were impacted. However, all 21 of those third parties can still retain ballot access if they have a showing of 2% of the general election vote. Failing that, third parties can regain a ballot line through petitions.

Professor Warren was my favorite among the candidates right up to the day she retired from the contest.

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — Alaska Democrats are deciding their choice for the party’s presidential nominee, as just one major candidate — former Vice President Joe Biden — remains actively campaigning.

Results are expected Saturday in the party-run primary, which became an exclusively vote-by-mail affair after concerns with COVID-19 scrapped plans for in-person voting sites and pushed back the original primary date of April 4.

There are eight names on the ballot, reflecting the roster of candidates when the ballots were printed. The party plans to tabulate results on a rank-choice ballot for Biden, U.S. Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard and the option of undeclared. Sanders, Warren and Gabbard have suspended their campaigns but asked to be included in the tallies, state party Chairwoman Casey Steinau said.
