Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) called on Thursday for Attorney General William Barr to step down after the top law enforcement official defended President Trump at a news conference previewing the release of special counsel Robert Mueller's report.
In a lengthy statement, Swalwell, one of more than a dozen Democrats running for president, said that Barr's news conference was only the latest piece of evidence of bias within the top ranks of the Justice Department.
Barr never should have been confirmed, but once confirmed, he should have recused himself from all oversight of the Mueller investigation, Swalwell said in a statement.
"Today, he made a show of allegiance to the President over the American people by declaring no collusion and excusing the President on the basis of his emotional state," he added. "He has proved that hes an embedded Trump ally who puts this Presidents political future above of the rule of law. That makes him unfit to serve. He must resign.

(4,844 posts)Is he pleading insanity? Wouldn't that be an Article 25 reason for removal from office?
Or maybe he means fear (of being caught in a crime perhaps?) - of course we should give Trump the same consideration he gives to asylum-seeking immigrants.

(5,269 posts)Mueller report makes it clear that Trump not only refused a sit down interview, but refused to answer questions regarding obstruction plus a number of Trump associates lied and/or refused to testify and provide requested information, some even under subpoena delaying the investigations and making it impossible to get to all the facts.

Impeachment is not being pursued at this point. There is an election in 18 months. It will be up to the American people to decide.

(37,648 posts)Not even an impeachment on the record for history. So why go after Trump's tax returns? Or do investigations into the obstruction themselves? There's no point, if impeachment is off the table. What else would they do with the results?
