Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumWhy hasn't Beto called for Trump's impeachment
https://www.cnn.com/videos/politics/2018/10/18/beto-orourke-trump-impeachment-sot-texas-town-hall-vpx.cnnI find it pretty interesting that when he was running against Cruz he said he would vote to impeach Trump. He said that there was already enough there to impeach Trump this was before the Mueller report was out, and now he cannot even give a straightforward opinion on what the house should do.

(2,785 posts)and he said he needed to read the full report, and that the decision would be left up to congress. He is running to be the President of the United States the leader of the free world or at least we were before Trump. If someone is running for an office as powerful as the Presidency than they should have the courage to form an opinion on how the house should deal with Trump.

(112,252 posts)I also think that is the wise course of action for him. Impeachment proceedings will rally the GOP into protecting Trump. O'Rourke should concentrate on winning the Democratic nomination rather advising on a decision that he doesn't get to make.

(2,785 posts)He called for Trump to be impeached in Texas and barely lost to Ted Cruz. If he is going to run against Trump he has to win the primaries and he is missing an opportunity to gain some polling momentum by not calling for Trump's impeachment now.

(112,252 posts)It would be reckless for him to suggest a course of action without reading the report. It's also important to realize that what may be popular at DU doesn't necessarily translate to the world outside of DU.
A decision to impeach is the modern equivalent of the Iraq War Resolution. I prefer to see a candidate not over-react, particularly when they know that the impeachment of Trump in the House will not result in a conviction in the Senate because we can't get two-thirds of the vote in the Senate.
Beto is also absolutely correct that the best way to get rid of Trump is to win the general election in November 2020. Beto is playing the long game which is better than making impulsive remarks. The campaign is in its infancy and I have no doubt that his poll ratings will reflect his dedication and wisdom. There is no reason why he needs to react any differently.

(2,785 posts)congressional policies as far back as anyone can remember. Why should impeachment be some type of sacred cow Presidential candidates shouldn't touch?

(89,252 posts)the congressional democrats on the committees to deal with this have more expertise in this area. listen to what eric swalwell had to say about this. he isn't coming out for impeachment but not opposed to it either. it's more about doing it right .

(2,113 posts)If it's what he truly believes is the best/right thing to do...and he will explain his position once he has read the report. Beto does NOT poll test or say what is expedient. He says what he honestly believes.

(2,785 posts)He said impeachment is merited. If he believes it's merited as he stated than he should call for Trump's impeachment. Trump can be impeached acquitted in the senate and still get beat in the general especially by a pro impeachment candidate who can blame the republican senate for failing to convict. There is no reason for him to be afraid to be himself he should stand on his principles the way Elizabeth Warren did.

(2,113 posts)Mitch McConnell would control the "trial." He will say that the Senate has "the sole power to try," and then will ignore the norms...again...and refuse to even try at all. Trump will use it as a talking point, energize his base, make Democrats look like they are just picking on him and it will do more harm than good.
The best course of action is actually to investigate the living hell out of the whole dirty crew. This will expose the truth to the people and keep it all right in the House where Pelosi can keep it going for as long as she wants. McConnell has proven over and over again that he will NOT act in the best interest of the country and will protect the orange turd.
I actually don't support impeaching. I support publicly investigating and laying all his secrets out for all to see...but keeping it away from McConnell.

(2,785 posts)will be from the house and the house could even slow walk it until the election is over if they want to. The house can control the narrative. Impeachment proceedings will be much more authoritative than just simply having investigations. Btw Trump and republicans are going to try and spin it as a victory for Trump regardless of what direction the house decides to go in. Which is why I think impeaching him is the best bet and it would be wise for our Presidential candidates to start pushing that narrative.

(2,113 posts)He doesn't "poll test" anything, ever. That's part of his appeal. It's also going to be really difficult to unify the country if we don't keep the focus on how Democrats will be better.

(2,785 posts)and as many republicans as possible who enabled him go down with him. I don't just want a candidate who can beat Trump. I want somebody who can route Trump by about 8 to 10 points. I would've said a higher number, but I think 8 to 10 is about the most we could hope for in today's climate. Shameful that even %1 of this country approves of Trump.
