Buttigieg steals Beto's thunder

Pete Buttigieg’s fast-rising 2020 presidential campaign is cutting into Beto O’Rourke’s viral mojo. Both candidates are seeking to convince Democrats that the party needs a generational change as they chase former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who are both in their 70s.

The polls have been largely steady in recent weeks for all the 2020 contenders except for Buttigieg, who has seen a notable rise and now ranks third in several polls, though behind Biden and Sanders. And Buttigieg has repeatedly spun impromptu moments on the campaign trail into viral internet moments.

“I didn’t know Buttigieg existed two months ago,” said David Friedman, a Colorado businessman who raised millions of dollars for the Obama-Biden campaigns and will now fundraise for Buttigieg. “I heard him speak a few times and saw him interviewed and I just decided, he’s the one. He’s inspiring. He has that fire in his belly. He appeals to your heart and your head.”

This week, he went viral for offering condolences in French after the Notre Dame fire. And Buttigieg has been battling anti-gay protesters on the campaign trail and picked a fight with Vice President Pence over LGBT issues, rallying liberals behind him and earning national headlines.

Liberal writer Ezra Klein and MSNBC anchor Joe Scarborough have compared Buttigieg to Obama, both for his out-of-nowhere rise and his rhetorical skills.

10. "The Hill" Analysis / Bias
Mon Apr 22, 2019, 10:54 AM
Apr 2019

The Hill covers both sides on the political spectrum and generally sources information properly. All news stories are sourced to either journalists in the field or credible media sources.

Story selection slightly favors the left, but is generally balanced. A factual search reveals The Hill has not failed any fact checks.
The Hill always corrects factual errors in a timely manner and therefore maintain a high factual record.

Overall, we rate The Hill slightly Left-Center biased based on story selection that very slightly favors the left and High for factual reporting due to proper sourcing.

I think what will actually prove to be Mayor Pete’s undoing is relatively straightforward.

In the face of another 4 years of Donnie Dems will ultimately go with a more conventional pick rather than a riskier choice like Pete. Some of that might be based on his sexuality but I think the majority of it will come from taking a long hard look at his credentials which are limited.

That will be the calculation most make when the warm fuzzy happy fun time stage we’re currently in gives way to actual campaign season late this year.

In a general the questions of his sexuality might become more important but unlike at least one of his supporters in this thread who is so cocky as to think it’s in the bag and Pete will be the nominee, I doubt Pete ever gets that far unless it’s on the ticket as a VP.

Seems like the Kamala Harris numbers dropped and now that block has shifted to Pete. The base looking for the next exciting new thing. Kamala Harris' senate questioning skills were overstated in terms of how they applied to presidential upside, and now Pete's speaking skills are overstated along the same lines.

I believe in big picture, not day to day overreaction to recent developments. When someone comes out of nowhere they return to nowhere.
