What the Press Is Missing About Pete Buttigieg

https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2019/04/journalists-only-focus-pete-buttigiegs-sexuality/587788/

Here’s the bottom line: Buttigieg isn’t a gay candidate for president—he’s a candidate for president who happens to be gay. Americans need reporters to explore whether he and the other candidates have the judgment, character, and experience required to do the most difficult job on the face of the Earth. It’s their job to help voters figure that out.

Buttigieg, like several of the other Democrats in the race, may well have the makings of a top-tier candidate. But I’m quite sure we’ll never really know if he does so long as the American people hear nothing more than that he’s poised to be the nation’s first gay president. (By the way, he might not even be the first gay president—some scholars point to James Buchanan.)

Should Buttigieg become the Democratic nominee, I hope it’s because voters have been convinced that he’s the person best equipped to solve the nation’s problems, lead us on the world stage, and ensure peace and prosperity through the course of his tenure. And what of the fact that he’s married to a man? Well, that sounds just great, too.
If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

The person elected will have to fix so many diverse problems, confront negative opinions and make everyone feel included.

It seems like an impossible job, but that is what we need.

We need to quit identifying our candidates by race, gender, or sexual orientation. The job of President of the United States is much bigger than that and it is character, intelligence, temperament, and judgment that count.

The President will encounter situations that no one can anticipate and few can manage. Even policy often comes second to these attributes. Policies can change or evolve, but the ability to handle world changing crises tops policy. I have seen candidates over the years where I agreed with them on most things, but I did not sense that they could handle the unforeseen executive decisions that every president must confront.

He is one of a kind, and none of those running can, or should be compared to Obama.

The right wing would spend the entire campaign (if not presidency) railing about the devil owning America and violating what god intended etc etc which would just be a nauseating scenario. I’m so sick of the hate. The rightwing will move on to a new type of hate, more intense than the racist hate nurtured by the right during the Obama years.
I LOVE Buttigieg, so much that I might consider him as first choice in spite of lack of experience in federal or even large-state governance, but the anti-gay backlash will likely be as repulsive as the antiabortion placards I sometimes walk past on my way to work.

I hope I am wrong. Because he IS brilliant.
