Bernie Sanders Believes Gen Z Is "a Generation of Tolerance and Decency"

BY LUCY DIAVOLO
JULY 11, 2019

Excerpts:

Listening to Sanders, you get the sense that he feels a duty to save this country and this planet and that being a part of the system is a necessary condition for that moral obligation.

Sanders visited the Teen Vogue offices this week, where he discussed some of his 2020 competitors, how to combat an impending sense of nihilism about our shared future, and what’s so special about this moment’s political superstar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

I think the younger generation today is probably the most progressive young generation in the history of this country. This is a generation which is profoundly anti-racist, anti-sexist, anti-homophobic, anti-xenophobic, and anti–religious bigotry. It is a generation of tolerance and decency. And that is no small thing. And that generation should be very proud of who they are.

Our campaign is about trying to tie all of these movements together and to talk about something that is not much talked about in Congress or the media: The fact that we are becoming an oligarchy. What I mean by that is we have a small number of incredibly wealthy people who have extraordinary influence over the economic and political life of this country. That’s the simple reality.

This is the point that I want to make, which distinguishes our campaign from all others. The real power in this country is not in Washington. It’s not even in the White House. The real power in this country is over on Wall Street. It’s in the drug companies. It’s in the insurance companies. It’s the fossil fuel industry. It’s the military-industrial complex.

What our campaign is about is that real change will not take place unless we take these folks on. I can sit here and tell you all my great plans, but at the end of the day, we’re going to have to do something very difficult: Have the courage to take on the greed of these powerful special interests.

So I’m going to have to go around from coast to coast, saying to people, saying to young people who are nihilistic right now, “I need your help. Let’s take these bastards on. Let’s create a government and an economy that works for all.”
