CBS announced Thursday that it was ending "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" in 2026 and would also be sunsetting "The Late Show" franchise, calling it "purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night." Jim Axelrod has more. - Aired on 07/18/2025.

2. Colbert gets 10 more months

to make fun of trump. Plus what can CBS do to him if he takes off the gloves ... fire him? They could fire him early but they would have to buy out his contract. I can't find a figure of what that would cost besides "millions".

If he was fired early he could just go to another platform and continue to bash trump. In the meantime, Colbert's firing makes him sympathetic and he gains the support of millions because it's unfair. It's all win for Colbert and no win for trump or CBS/Paramount.
