Trump's IRS suit ends with $1.8B compensation fund - but who is this money going to? - MS NOW Reports

Trump has dropped his lawsuit against the IRS in exchange for a nearly $1.8 billion compensation fund for Trump's allies who say they have been targeted by the DOJ, particularly during the Biden administration. MS NOW Senior Legal Reporter Lisa Rubin has more details on the case.

Justice Department Correspondent for The New York Times Glenn Thrush and Staff Writer for The Atlantic Ashley Parker join to share their analysis. - Aired on 05/18/2026.

...and Lisa Rubin explains, this isn't a settlement. This money comes from an appropriation Congress makes to the DOJ to pay out successful claims against the government. They're using this as a slush fund to hand out money to Trump's prospective Brown Shirts.

I want to re-link to an illustration I offered last week that gives some perspective on just how much money some of these totals that are kicked around exist in the real world. The illustration was created by AI (Microsoft Copilot), and each stack is made up of aggregates of $100 bills. The legend tells how much time it would take to exhaust the money if a person had to spend one dollar a second until it's all gone.

No working person should have any hesitation about taxing this country's ultra-rich much more than we do now. And there should be no way Congress lets Trump get away with redistributing this money Congress has allocated for a specific purpose.
