Let's talk about the Trump vs the EU: trade deal collapse edition.... - Belle of the Ranch
Well, howdy there Internet people. It's Belle again. So, today we're going to talk about Trump versus the EU trade deal collapse edition.
Trump promised a wave of massive trade deals. They never occurred. One of the few deals he was able to tentatively obtain was one with the EU. Then Trump decided that he wanted Greenland. When his plans to buy it failed, he decided to use tariffs to try to force Denmark into selling Greenland to the US. Well, the EU halted the approval process of the trade deal, and it has currently collapsed.
So, we'll start with that and then go over the related development that is 25 years in the making. That is another huge signal.
Trump's US EU trade deal was on the fast track to approval in the EU, but because of his Greenland antics, they're halting the approval. This is going to bother Trump because to him, I think it's the biggest deal ever made.
Now, it's easy for me to tie the halt of the biggest deal ever made to Trump making an amateur mistake with Greenland. What's the proof? They literally said that was the reason. "Given Donald Trump's threats regarding Greenland, approval is not possible at this stage. The 0% tariffs on US products must be put on hold."
The European Commission president said, "Territorial integrity and sovereignty are fundamental principles of international law. They are essential for Europe and for the international community as a whole. We have consistently underlined our shared transatlantic interest in peace and security in the Arctic, including through NATO. The pre-coordinated Danish exercise conducted with allies responds to the need for strengthening Arctic security and poses no threat to anyone. The EU stands in full solidarity with Denmark and the people of Greenland. Dialogue remains essential and we are committed to building on the process begun already last week between the Kingdom of Denmark and the US. Tariffs would undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous downward spiral. Europe will remain united, coordinated, and committed to upholding its sovereignty.
So, what's the other part? The EU and a block of South American countries signed a free trade deal. The European Commission president described the deal by saying, "It reflects a clear and deliberate choice. We choose free trade over tariffs. We choose a productive long-term partnership over isolation."
Not just is that some pretty obvious shade being thrown, it's also important to realize Trump is trying to revitalize the Monroe Doctrine, which is designed to keep European influence out of the Americas. And this is Europeans locking in influence via trade. This trade deal has been negotiated for 25 years. I wonder if any country's constantly changing posture helps speed it along? Of course, it's just a trade deal, but it's a trade deal of the exact opposite type of Trump's protectionist nonsense. And unlike Trump's attempts at influence, it actually went through. It's just the first step for Europe.
Trump promised a new order to international trade. That may be the one promise he really delivers on, just not in the way he pictured.
Anyway, it's just a thought. Y'all have a good day.
