Let's talk about Republicans calling for a Minneapolis probe.... - Belle of the Ranch
Well, howdy there Internet people. It's Belle again. So, today we're going to talk about Republicans calling for a Minneapolis probe.
Yep, you heard that right. While the Trump administration is busy demanding voter role information from Minnesota and trying to simply deflect from the giant mess they've caused, the questions surrounding the events are now so large that even Republican legislators are calling for a probe into what happened with some even saying it's time to pack up and get out of Minneapolis. The House Homeland Security Committee's Republican chair has invited ICE, Border Patrol, and higher ranking DHS officials to come testify. We'll see how that plays out as the situation evolves, but it's clear the killing of ICU nurse Alex Pretti has reset a lot of political tones.
Senate Oversight Committee Chair James Comer of Kentucky, who could also call for hearings, just skipped over that part and went straight to suggesting Trump pull ICE out of the city and said, "If I were President Trump, I would almost think about, okay, if the mayor and the governor are going to put our ICE officials in harm's way, and there's a chance of losing more, you know, innocent lives or whatever, then maybe go to another city and let the people of Minneapolis decide. Do we want to continue to have all of these illegals?
We all know that it isn't the mayor and governor putting authorities in harm's way, but that's framing that would sell it to Trump. Republicans in Congress know how bad this is hurting them, and they're trying to convince Trump that this isn't working. It's going to be a tough sale because immigration is the only policy of his that hasn't completely backfired in the public's eyes. Republicans are working to save Trump from himself because they can see the polls and understand that because of ICEs tactics and killings and the administration's rhetoric, Trump is on his way to being underwater on this, too.
Retiring Senator Tom Tillis said, "There must be a thorough and impartial investigation into yesterday's Minneapolis shooting, which is the basic standard that law enforcement and the American people expect following any officer involved shooting. For this specific incident. that requires cooperation and transparency between federal, state, and local law enforcement. Any administration official who rushes to judgment and tries to shut down an investigation before it begins are doing an incredible disservice to the nation.
Senator Murkowski, who has a habit of breaking with Trump on some issues, said the quiet part aloud, "Lawfully carrying a firearm does not justify federal agents killing an American, especially as the video footage appears to show after the victim has been disarmed."
But it's not just the usual suspects. Even Representative Dusty Johnson, who is as loyal to Trump as they come, said, "Politicians, protesters, and law enforcement all have an obligation to deescalate the situation in Minnesota. As with any officer involved shooting, this demands a thorough investigation."
Some have wondered if the sudden willingness of congressional Republicans to break publicly with Trump has more to do with Trump's falling numbers and approaching lame duck status than a sudden appreciation for the rule of law. I guess we'll find out.
Anyway, it's just a thought. Y'all have a good day.
